EARLY START.

INCIDENT AT ELLERSLIE. AIETHODS ON DOMINION . . COURSES. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, April. 1. The starting of a race at Ellerslie on Saturday before the totalisator had closed has prompted inquiries as to the methods used to prevent such an irregularity. The Auckland Racing Club’s system has been to depend on the synchronisation of the watches of the starter, timekeeper, totalisator officials and others concerned, the machine being closed and the race started at the respective times stated in the race edrd. . The fact that this system failed on Saturday has suggested that additional precautions might be taken of .instructing the starter not to despatch the field until Ire has been advised that the totalisator has closed. ' Such a signal, by flag, balloon or bell is given on most of the New Zealand courses, and in Auckland it is used at tho Alexandra Park and Takapuna meetings.
