LABOUR CONFERENCE
RESOLUTIONS CARRIED. Per Press Association. •• AVELLINGTON, April 1. At the Labour Party’s Conference, the following resolution moved by Mr T. R.- Cooke,' seconded by Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., was carried: “That the Labour conference affirms that the wise and efficient administration of the public services of tho Dominion will give a better return to the community than the same type of service under private enterprise and pledges the party to oppose all efforts which may be made to retard -or handicap local body or State organisations which are providing services or supplying. goods at less cost than they have been supplied,'' or can be'supplied, by the private trader.” The evening discussion was mainly devoted to a discussion on the subject of organising work throughout the Dominion.
Arising out of the N.Z. Labour Party, executive’s report upon the subject of unemployment, Mr J. Roberts moved and Mr R. Semple seconded: “That this conference regrets the failure of the Government to redeem its promises to find work for the unemployed and to pay the minimum rate of 14s per day, and demands the immediate provision of employment for the abnormal numher of men now unemployed; further, that legislation shoukl be introduced early in the next sessiop, enacting contributing unemployment insurance and the other recommendations unanimously agreed upon by the National Industrial Conference.”
This was discussed at length in the afternoon and evening and was carried.
