EASTER RAGE MEETINGS.

STAR AREA WINS AGAIN. CONCENTRATE BEATS TOXEUMA, SYDNEY CUP WON BY AN OUTSIDER. Yesterday tlie Easter racing- carnival was continued, the Auckland, Feilding and Wairarapa meetings being brought to a close, while the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was opened at Riccarton. -At Feilding Star Area was again successful, while at Auckland Concentrate defeated Toxeuma in the Great Northern St. Leger. The Sydney Cup was won by the outsider Crucis.

EASTER HANDICAP TO STAR AREA. LIMITED SURPRISES IN SPRINT. THRIFT TAKES HACK CUP. Although tho course had improved during the week-end, the overhead conditions were not so favourable for the concluding day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s autumn fixture yesterday, a keen easterly wind making matters unpleasant for patrons who were present in largo numbers.. The volume of money tor the totalisator attained excellent figures, the sum of £37,471 being handled for the day as compared with £30,738 for the second day last year, making an aggregate of £09,081 for the fixture as compared with £61,259 of twelve months ago — an increase of £7822 —a pleasing outcome.

A magnificent finish in tho Easter Handicap saw Star Area follow up his first day’s success in the Manchester Handicap by again triumphing over Merry Damon and Manly, but in the Denbigh Handicap—the open sprint — the same consistency was not forthcoming, the outsider of the field, Limited, winning in hollow fashion fro mtlic fii'st day’s winner, The Raider, and Keddar in the fast time of 1.12 3-s—a record for tho course.

That popular contest —the Orotia Hack Cup—was productive of a splendid finish between Thrift and Atholspear, the latter being somewhat unlucky not to prevail, the Greyspear gelding having swerved badly under the whip at a highly critical stage. At the conclusion of the event >ihe cup, which had been presented by Mr Jackman, as of former years, was handled to the successful owner, Mr T. A. Duncan, by Mrs A. E. Sandford, wife of tho president, while the Fordell mentor, F. Tilley, received a replica of the trophy. Cheers were given on tire call of Mr Sandford for the successful owner and trainer, and also the rider (L. G. Morris), while the donor was also remembered.

AIRTIGHT’S IMPROVED SHOWING. On the strength of his first day’s performance, Red Bank (£743) was installed favourite for tile Kimbolton Hack Hurdles, Sir Moment (£647) and Royal Acre (£520) being next in favour. However, of the trio a fourth by the last-named was the best they could do, Airtight giving a vastly improved performance to win nicely from a newcomer in Hymestrason. Positions changed quickly over the first two furlongs, Hymestrason going to the front to lead Wyeford, Royal Acre, Airtight and Red Bank passing through the straight, Airtight having run about at his fences. Royal Acre joined Hymestrason going along the back with Airlight and Wyeford together next, but Hymesitrason outjumped Royad Acre four furlongs from home and the Hymestra gelding was clear as they turned for home. Airtight came up quickly approaching the entrance and. although he again ran about at the final fence, he had sufficient pace to beat Hymestrason home by two lengths, with Fail-one, who had also made up ground fast, a length back and just ahead of Royal Acre. Itcd Bank was only a fair fifth with Sir . Moment next. AIR WAY GETS UP.

In the absence of Coolmint, Grand Acre (£913) was installed favourite lor tlie llewa Hack Handicap, Airway (£750) and Callapat (£617) being next ill demand in a free betting race. Callapat went to the front immediately upon the tapes being lifted to show the way the Bank Note, Airway and Grand Acre crossing the top. Callapat was still in front at the distance, but over the final pinch he failed to stall off the challenge of Airway, tho Hawera representative getting up to win nicely by a length. There was a gap of two lengths to Bank Note with \vhite Ringlet and Malahat both ahead of the favourite. STAR AREA AGAIN.

' Vivo was an absentee from the Easter Handicap in which Merry Damon (£1247) was preferred to Manly (£938) and the first day’s winner, Star Area (£928). Eractiousness on the part of Joy Bird delayed the start and she was sent to the outside position, but despite such she was the smartest to begin and the Argosy maro led Merry Damon, Manly, Orazone and Avro out of the straight and-into the back. Passing the five furlong post Joy Bird was three lengths clear of Merry Damon and Manly, with Orazone and Avro ahead of Star Area, but the leader came back to her field crossing the top and Merry Damon went to the front once the straight was reached with Manly at his heels. Star Area had meantime been making up his leeway and in the run home the Manchester Handicap winner wore down Merry Damon to win by a neck, Manly being a short two lengths back and just ahead of Joy Bird, Avro and Discourse being last to finish. ROYAL BLACK WINS WELL. All ten acceptors went to the post in the Awahuri Hack Handicap in which Warfille (£495) was installed a firm favourite from Calamine (£782) and the first day’s winner. Royal Black (£592). Ali Baba, from the inside position at the barrier, was first away from Royal Black, Warfille and Patearoa, the last named having been required to come from the extreme outside position. There was little change among the leaders racing- down the back, Ali Baba being still ahead or Royal Black, Warflame, Patearoa and Wrfille passing the half' mile post. Royal Black took command at the straight entrance with Patearoa heading off Ali Baba and Warfille, but Aurora Borealis and Calamine both came up to beat the tiring Patearoa and Warfille, although they could not reach Royal Black, who won nicely by three lengths from Aurora Borealis, who had a head margin over Calamine—the last-named having finished very. fast. Patearoa was fourth with Acred and Warfille next to finish. A GOOD PERFORMANCE. All sixteen starters went to the post jn the Waiata Stakes in which betting took a wide range, Blackpool (£1015) was preferred to Naselle (£660) and Oral (£509). Oral, despite having drawn a bad position at the barrier, was smartest to begin from Wine Tray, Blackpool, Grattan, Naselle,

Gambler and Rillet, but passing the four furlong post Some Acre ran to tho front to lead Blackpool, Grattan, Oral, Naselle, Rillet and Gambler to the straight enranco where Blackpool immediately ran into the lead. However, Oral shot out in pursuit and wore down the favourite in tho ruil to the post to prevail by a neck, Grattan being in third berth a length and a-half back. Then came Rillett, C'loverleaf, Naselle and Gambler. A SPECTACULAR BURST.

The defection of Whenuanui left but six runners to contest the open sprint—the Denbigh Handicap—a great betting race finding The Raider (£1219) wind up favourite from Keddar (£1116) and Dobbin (£1031), but the public were fated to be again astray for the outsider of the field, Limited, swamped the opposition in the run home. Ridgway, The Raider, and Dobbin led out from the barrier, and passing the half mile post the trio were racing in line with Limited, Broad Acre . and Keddar likewise in line behind. Ridgemount was the first to give way, The Raider and Dobbin leading Keddar' and Limited into the straight. A great battle ensued with The Raider and Dobbin leading Keddar and Limited into the straight. A great battle ensued with The Raider and Keddar fighting it out, but 50 yards from home Limited came with a spectacular burst of speed to smother the other pair and win by three lengths from The Raider with Keddar three pats of a length back. Then came Dobbin and Bdoad Acre. ( The race was run- in the fast time of 1.12 3-5. THRIFT’S HACK CUP. Acred and Ivilorell failed to put in ■an appearance in the Oroua Hack Cup, Zippor (£1113), who was making his first appearance at tho meeting, being installed favourite with Kavvhalcina (£798) and lied Fuchsia (£789) preferred to Thrift (£719). A race for positions going away from home .followed the lifting of the tapes, Coolmint and Zippor going to the front to, pilot Skyrider, Balloon, Thrift and Atholspear into tho back. Zippor worked clear passing tire five furlong post, but Coolmint again closed crossing the top, Thrift, Skyrider and Atholspear being next in attendance, Red Fuchsia in the meantime having drifted slightly. Following his receiving a check, the rider of Thrift got through on the rails, Atholspear being wider out, and, with Zippor compounding, the pair were left to fight out the issue. Atholspear swerved badly under pressure and he just failed to gather up Thrift before the post was reached, a nose separating them. • Five lengths back came Kawhakina. ahead of Coolmint, Wlnsogue, Balloon, Red Fuchsia and Zippor the favourite having stopped very badly.

ROYAL DAMON AT LAST. Royal Damon (£1871), who had promised to get on tho winning list in the very near future, was installed, (i firm favourite lor tho Makino Handicap, Jeanette £1133) and Whenuanui £936) being next in favour. Royal Damon led Road Hog and Whenuanui out from the barrier, but going along the back Whenuanui took command to open up quite a gap from Royal Damon with Road llog and Jeanette ahead of Vivo and Soveiia. Approaching tho straight entrance the field closed up, and with heads straightened out Royal Damon shot to the front with Jeanette, who had come through on the rails, in pursuit. The challenger could not. however,, make, any impression on tho favourite, who strode on to win by a good three lengths. Two and a half lengths further back came Whenuanui, who had run wide at the entrance, with Soveiia and Vivo next to finish. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
