QUEBEC DOG DERBY.
1 RACE OF 120 MILES. ALASKAN “MUSHER” .WINS. An American musher, Leonhard Seppala, of Alaska, won the Quebec Log Derby, beating Emil St. Godard, Northern Manitoba, winner for two years. It was the first time an American won the race since it became an international event. The race starts 120 miles from the ancient capital, and ends, after three days of 40-mile laps, at Grand Allee, on the edge of the Elams of Abraham, where Wolfe died, and Montcaim, mortally wounded, rode on his black horse to dies the morning after. St. Godard, who uses iiuskies, drove with hard luck, having three dags out of action at the beginning of the third day. He gamely tackled the task with four dogs against Soppala, a veteran with 25 years’ service in Alaska, who uses purebred Siberian wolfhounds. St. Godard, sure to lose l went out in the last lap to give Ills supporters at Quebec the satisfaction of seeing him finish. A hundred yards from the start he commenced to run ahead of his team, and finished that way. On the run, he was only 40 minutes behind Seppala, who started and finished with seven dogs. The veteran Alaskan, who lias competed six times, had his first victory. He drove superbly throughout, and discarded liis whip on the third day. He beat St. Godard’s record for the race, and was awarded the condition prize for his dogs. The veteran Alaskan, whohas competed six times, had his first victory. A remarkable performance was put up by a 15-year-old dog puncher, Lapointe, whose three dogs were fresh after their 120-mile run —two long-hair-ed dogs, led by a mongrel. Lapointe got a special “hand’' at the mushers’ banquet, an event eagerly looked forward to by men who have not yet known the jazz age, and the majority of whom wear coats of unplucked beaver that they have caught themselves.
