BOWLING TOURNEY

THE EARLY ROUNDS, WEATHER CONDITIONS BAD. Very unfavourable weather conditions ruled for the annual Easter tournament commenced under tho auspices of the Martawatu Bowling Centre at the Palmerston North, Manawatu, and Terrace End greens yesterday, but the greens played well considering the drizzling ram which fell all the afternoon. The weather, which was expected to improve, grew steadily worse after midday, but the day’s programme was completed. In declaring the tournament open at tho Palmerston North green, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., president of the centre, extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, stating that he was very plea&f ed to see those who had renewed their association with the tournament. The number of rinks engaged was not as large as usual, but tho entries received had been very fair. Mr Nash apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Palmerston North Club, president who was at Tauranga, and stated that the Manawatu Centre was very grateful to the local clubs for the use of their greens during the tournament. Provided tho weather remained reasonable, he thought that the greens would be found to be in perfectly satisfactory condition, though they might bo fairly heavy, but that would not be a handicap. Expressing the hope that the weather would improve, the president of the centre reiterated his words of welcome, and cheers were given for the visitors.

At the Manawatu green play was opened by Mr J. B. Gerrana, w r ho expressed regret that rain had fallen, but said that it would not affect the excellent state of the greens. The entries had not been as numerous as previously, but it had to be remembered that improved travelling facilities offered a greater inducement to the public to patronise other attractions. Mr Gerrand welcomed the Victoria, Island Bay, Lyall Bay, Fitzroy, Karori and Hataitai rinks, which he said generally patronised the tournament, and he wished them every success. Similar expressions of welcome were conveyed by Mr G. B. Cope at Terrace End, who said that, if the total number of rinks showed a decrease, quality was well represented in the teams. The standard of play on the average was high, but the third round was played in a steady downpour of rain which greatly militated against scientific play. The skips whoso rinks came through the three rounds without a loss were as follow:—W. B. Crump (P.N.), G. W. Wardrop (Woodville),, E. S. Sparrow (Terrace End), J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay). N. H. Nash (P.N.) and C. J. Norwood (Victoiia). Nine rounds have to be decided before post-section play commences, and the matches were continued to-day, with the final of the section play on Easter Monday.
