WRONGFUL ARREST.
AUSTRALIAN AT HOME.
REQUEST FOR COMPENSATION
There was an echo of the murder at Boonjie Camp, Queensland, in tne House of Commons a few days ago. Captain lan Fraser, Conservative member for St. Pancras. sought compensation for Hubert Algar storey, who was wrongfully arrested on a a charge of murdering Frederick Charles Walters. . , In reply to Captain Fraser, who .asked if the Home Secretary would cooperate with the Queensland Government to secure compensation toi Storey, Sir William Joynson-Hicks said that Storey was*-arrested as a result of a cablegram from the Queensland Government. , The particulars of identification tallied so perfectly when the mail was arr'ested that when tire police discovered he was not the man wanted they cabled to Queensland. It took four days for a reply directing his release to reach England. ~ ~ , , The Home Secretary said that lie deeply regretted *he indignity that Storey had suffered, but he could not admit any responsibility on the part of the police Captain Fraser: Has the Homo Secretary seen the letter of the Queensland Agent-General, stating that the discrepancies between the cabled description of the wanted man and Storey were such that lie could not understand the police taking action. In view of this conflict of opinion could not the Home Secretary be generous and give compensation ? Sir William : I have the cablegram and I must confess that the description tallies to an extraordinary degree with that of Storey. It is not for me to comment on the action of the Queensland Government, but the police only carried out their request to arrest Storey. Captain Fraser: Has the Home Secretary’ seen the man P . , Sir William: I am quite willing to see him if you bring him to the House, but I warn you that the man’s father threatened me with personal violence. Captain Fraser: His father is a very aged man. This suggestion is prejudicial'to the case. I give notice that 1 will raise the matter on an early occasion.
