RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Racing at Feilding, Auckland, Tauherenikau, Waipukurau, Christchurch, Riverton, Beaumont and Kumara on Monday.

Shrewd and Curtsey promise to <x>mmand tho betting market in the Maiden Race at Waipukurau. The former is required to give lib to his companion. Fee Simple and Inflame are two local candidates down to contest the Hatuma Handicap at Waipukurau on Monday and, provided they make tho trip, they should be heard from. Tom Byrne and Kinross have displayed preferences for the scurry distance.

The Hack Handicap at Waipukurau finds Break o’ Day, who has been competing over the battens, in the role of topweight and, even with! 9.0, he should beat more than beat him. The reoent form of Delude points to the Elysian gelding seeing out a mile- and a quarter satisfactorily.

The poor field of five runners survived acceptance day in the Cup race at Waipukurau. There is little form to commend any of the quintette’ and, while Battlement might give a glimpse of his old form,. Gaze and Tanagra should be in greater demand avl'jjn the * totalizator closes.

Kaihoro figure in both the Oringi Handicap and the Flying Handicap and the Lucullus filly has been given t-he steadier of 10.9 in the former. However, should she elect to start she should not lack friends, although To Awha showed herself to be a very smart sort when she won both days at Dannevirke. Home Made and Atareria will be in attendance at Waipukurau to represent local stables and it would not be surprising to find them making a bold bid for the honours. The pair are required to give Brigadier Bill 31bs, while almost a stone away is tho much boomed Hastings representative,. Imperial Fame. Repay was backed with confidence on the opening day at Dannevirke only to fail to return her supporters a dividend. The outing should have done her good and the King Soult mare might fare better in the Purimu Hack Handicap at Waipukurau on Monday. Sylvan Dell and Delude, however, will not bo without friends.

*' There is a prospect of there being but one dividend in tne Flying Handicap at Waipukurau for Kaihoro, Tanagra and Sylvan Dell claim double engagements and their intentions have not been declared. In the absence of Kaihoro, it is possible that Millais will be preferred to Queen’s Choice on the totalisator. The defection of Aberfeldy from tho Kildaire Hurdles at Riccarton on Monday has weakened the field materially and patrons may now select Troilus or Dancer as their favourite.

Disorder has only to repeat his Trentham running to; play a part in tho dociaion of the Champagne Stakes. at Ri<> carton, although form points to Pink Coat being installed a firm favourite with First Money commanding some support. A fair class field promises to be presented in the Autumn Plate at Riccarton in which. Phastar The Viscount and Hurly Burly should attract tho attention of patrons. Several of the candidates in the Champagne ’’ Stakes also figure in the Russley Plate and First Money might be better suited by the shorter distante, although Francolin and Juniper have shown that they, can scamper.

Siiver Paper has been favourite for the Groat Easter Handicap at Riccarton for some time and his brilliant track work will probably find the Paper 1 -Money gelding so installed, on the day itself, although it would hot be surprising l to find Black Duke and' Gay,. Sonnet making their presence felt. " l i. Bernera won at AwapUrii in attractive style and, well served by his rider, the Hastings representative should command respect in the Gimcrack Handicap at Riccarton. Noteworthy and Star Stranger II may also attract some support on the totalisator. Pink Note and Seatown again figure in tho Sockburn Handicap, and if the Archiestown gelding is reserved for the nine furlongs race he should not lack for support. Thorndale might, ho\vever, prove troublesome to the two topweights.

The Courtenay. Handicap—a seven furlong event —will bring the first day’s programme at Riccarton to a close. Sudden Storm and Silver Coot might supply the favourite for the event, although Tripaway has proved herself a speedy sort.

It is probable that Paper Money will have a representative iq. hurdle. races before long, as his son, Overdrawn, is reported to be shaping well in his schooling efforts.

British King is reported to havo developed a splint. He is not engaged at •the approaching meeting at Ellerslie, but figures in several races at the Avondale meeting, to be held a week later. Arch Queen is a recent addition to the active brigade at Ellerslie, where she is undergoing her preparation at H. Hastedt’s hands.

A. E. Ellis, who had only a few mounts over the sticks last season, has expressed his intention of again actively participating in hurdle and steeple'chaso events throughout the approaching season.

Had he not been galloped on entering the straight it is extremely probable that Prince Val would have reversed matters with Brilliant Light in the Maunganui Handicap at the Bay of Plenty meeting, writes “Whalebone.” When he returned to the enclosure Prince Val showed two gaping wounds on his near hind leg. J. Olsen, who recently left Trentham to set up as a trainer at Nelson, has done well with the Sutala gelding Raineses, whose latest efforts resulted in a double win at the Westport meeting, making his total five wins so far this season, while he has 1 also been once second and three times third.

Spring Abbey, who registered a surprise win in the County Stakes at Tauranga, is owned by Mr J. Pohlcn, of Matamata. He is a three-year-old gelding by Quin Abbey from Waiomi, who traces back on the dam’s side to those two great stud matrons, Waterwitch and Mermaid. The New Zealand-bred gelding Zircon who was taken to Australia recently by Mr W. Garrett, chiefly witn a view to contesting the Great Eastern Steeplechase, had his first race in South Australia on the 16th inst. This was a Brush Steeplechase. Zircon is stated to have looked all over a winner at the concluding obstacle, but he tripped on landing and fell.

According to the Sydney Referee the reserve price placed on Hie three ycai'-old colt Strephon is £15,09- It L repo r tc l that an offer of 12,00) guineas was recently made for the colt, which was subsequently raised to 13,000 guinears, but Mr Green declined to sell at the price named. Mr Green is credited with statmg that in the event of Strephon remaining unsold it is his intention to send the colt to England.

Footfall, though not actually lame, was showing signs of soreness early this week, and G. Murray-Aynsley decided to throw him out of work rather than risk a breakdown. This was tho reason for his withdrawal from Riccarton engagements (says a southern exchange). He will bo blistered and spelled until next' autumn, after which it is hoped that he will survive a preparation for racing the following season.

One of the most promising horses seen out at the Bay of Plenty meeting was Kaha, a three-year-old 1 filly by Limond — Noreen. Kaha won the Herries cMemorial Hack -Cup, and, although there was not a quality field behind him, he did it so well as to draw attention -to his future prospects. Kaha was purchased by Mr Clive Matthews from Mr G. F. Moore, of Wanganui, some months ago, . and did not make his appearance on the . Te Rapa track until early in February. He is a half-brother to Gaillard. New Zealand-bred horses were to the fore at the Menangle Park meeting at Sydney on March 19. Lord Romeo (Romeo —Agnestes) won the Menangle Park Two

Hundred, seven furlongs; Rubicon, by Arrowsmith —Rada, annexed the Maiden Welter, one mile, and Short Order, by Paper Money froiy. Snow Waif, scored in the Welter Handicap, six furlongs. A private letter received in Auckland from W. Garrett states that he' has arrived at Adelaide with Zircon, who stood the trip well. Garrett expected to be able to give Zircon a run in a couple of minor steoplcchases before taking on the Great Eastern Steeplechase at Onkaparinga on Monday. This is an event of 3000 sovs, run over three miles and a quarter, and Zircon is weighted at 9.11.

In referring to great mares that havo figured- on the Australian turf “Touchstone” penned the following:—“La Carabine has strong claims to be considered the greatest staying mare Australia has known. She won the Sydney Gup and many other races. Over tho three miles of tho Champion Sakes she stayed too well for Wakeful. Words fail to describe how great a stayer a horse must have been that could outstay Wakeful at weight-for-age over that distance. At the Bendigo Cup meeting Bob Lewis told me that, though ho regarded Manfred as tho greatest horse up to a mile and a half that he has ever ridden, he gave the palm to La Carabine as the greatest stayer he has ever ridden.” An interesting incident in connection with La Carabine’s career is that 6he was set the task of endeavouring to win the Doncaster Handicap (one mile) at two years old, in- which there was a field of 24, composed of all ages. La Carabino was sent out in the position of second favourite but she met with trouble on the journey and failed to gain a situation. Despite the severe tost applied to her at the juvenile stage of her career Carbine’s daughter won the Champion Stakes at six years and seven years old, which showed in pointed form that her efforts at two years old had not been detrimental.

Mr Dave Stevens, track supervisor at the Awapuni racecourse, was taken seriously ill on the second day of the local meeting and was admitted to the local hospital for treatment. His many friends will be pleased to learn that he is now making excellent progress towards recovery. During his compulsory absence track operations aro being supervised by Mr F. Stevens.

“TOO MANY COURSES.”

AUSTRALIAN OWNER’S VIEWS.

A visitor to Wellington the other day was Mr H. G. Kirkpatrick, of Sydney, the owner of Gay Ballerina. Speaking about Gay Ballerina, Mr Kirkpatrick said he was tho first Australian owner to win a classic race (the Siros’ Produce Stakes at Palmerston North) on New Zealand soil, and wa6 very proud of tho fact. Gay Ballerina would be wintered in Sydney in order to acclimatise her to Australian conditions, would race at tho spring meeting at Randwick, and would return to New Zoaland for the classic events next Christmas.

Mr Kirkpatrick, as a racing man, Jhinks there are too many racecourses in Now Zealand, and coming from a country where the totalisator is a poor second as a betting medium to the “bookie,” he finds it difficult to understand how some of the country racing clubs can find the money to, maintain their fine properties on five or 6ix race days a year. “Surely,” said the vistor, “it would be better for some of them to amalgamate into one big club—better for the people and better for the horse owners. Even how I understand some of the smaller clubs borrow the use of a racecourse in a larger centre to hold an occasional meeting, which 6eems to indicate that there are too many courses. J, ' :
