RACING CARNIVAL.

MANY EASTEE MEETINGS. FEILDING. AUCKLAND AND WAIRARAPA. MANCHESTER HANDICAP TO STAR AREA.

The Easter racing carnival commenced to-day when several meetings were held, the principal being those at Eeilding, Auckland and Wairarapa. The principal event at Eeilding was won by Star Area. v Generally speaking, the weather conditions were good, and some interesting contests were witnessed.

FEILDING AUTUMN FIXTURE. LOCARNO WINS HURDLES. ONGA HACK TO RICHFIELD. Contrary to expectations, conditions wore excellent for the opening day of the FeildIng autumn fixture to-day. The track, whilo a shade slow, was splendid, while there was a crowd of good dimensions present. . The opening event—the Kawa Kawa Hurdles—witnessed the triumph of Locarno and Rod Bank, Awapuni’s two representatives in the contest, who filled first and second placings and thereby added further to this centre's long list of successes in races of this nature during tho present season. AWAPUNI TO THE FORE. With Sir Moment and Hymcstrason dropping out, there wore eight runners to contest the Kawa Kawa Hurdles and tho two Awapuni representatives, Locarno (£890) and Red Bank (£435) wero installed the favoured candidates and they both proved ■worthy of the faith imposed for they filled first and second berths at tho finish. Airtight was smartest to begin from Fairone, Locarno and Royal Aero, but beforo the straight was reached Locarno had assumed charge from Fairone, Otauru Lass and Airtight. Somo of tho jumpers were not fencing at all cleanly, and going into tho back, Red Bank and Royal Acre deposed Fairone, Otauru Lass and Airtight, it being evident a long way from home that tho finish would he between tho trio. Passing the half mile post Red Bank and Locarno drew away from Royal Acre and. they came into tho straight in that order. Red Bank flattered his backers momentarily, but Locarno experienced little difficulty in securing a half length advantago to hold it to tho post. Two and a half lengths back camo Royal Acre, with Fairone and Onward well clear of Otauru Lass and Harrowgate. The rider of Fairone made a great recovery at tho final fence after being right out of the saddlo. RICHFIELD WINS WELL.

The good field: of 16 runners was presented in the Ongo Hack Handicap in which Seamstress was the solo, defection. Tho bracketed pair, Grand Acre and Foe Sirnplo (£627) wound up slightly better favourite than Coolmint (£617) and Inflame (£507), but a surprise was forthcoming when Richfield drew away in tho run home to win very comfortably. Inflame was, as usual, the smartest to begin and tho Lord Quex gelding led Fee Simple, Airway, Boundary and Coolmint along tho back. Callapat, Richfield and Grand Aero improved tnoir positions crossing tho top and at the distance Callapat promised to be the winner, but tho Callaghan gelding died away badly and Richfield shot out to finish full of running two and a half lengths ahead of Coolmint, who got up to beat Inflame by three parts of a length. White Ringlet was fourth with Fee Simplo and Ali Baba next. . A STIRRING FINISH. Gold Cure and Manly failed to reach the post in tho Manchester Handicap, a bare two dividend field resulting. Star Area (£1176) tvas installed a firm favourito from Merry Damon (£781) and Joy Bird (£737). From an excellent despatch Joy Bird went to tho front to pilot Star Area, Avro, Briar Root, Orazone and Merry. Damon as they passed through the straight and into the back, tho wholo field racing at half length intervals. Approaching tho half mile post Merry Damon and Orazone commenced to move up to tho leaders, Joy Bird and Star Area being on terms as they came, into tho straight with Merry Damon and Orazone at thoir heols. Tho issue appeared to be in doubt at the distance, but Star Area finished tho strongest to win by a long neck from Orazone with Merry Damon, who ddi not experience the freest of passages in tho straight, a neck away and just ahead of Joy Bird. Briar. Root was right up fifth .with Avro last to finish. LUCKY RUN ON THE RAILS.

Naselle, Npawhone, Hard Gold, Seamstress, Grattan, Hopwood, Black Acre and Mademoiselle were defections from the Maiden Stakes, hut the field of 1 4 lunners nevertheless regained, tho publfc i •electing Malahat (£963) as their favourite, there being smaller money for Clover Leaf (£395) and Warzone (£356). Wine Tray jumped out smartly at the lift of to lead Oral, Latakia, Malahat and Gambler along to the turn where Gambler improved his position, Wine Tray being, however, still in the van from Gambler, Latakia, Oral, Malahat, and Some Acre as they turned into the straight. The favourite was lucky enough to squeeze through on the rails and in tho run tio the pest he steadily overtook tho leaders to get up and win by half a length from Oral with Gambler a neck away. Then came Some Acre, Warzone and Clover Leaf. The win of Malahat brought another sucoss to Awapuni and gave A, G.
