INTERESTING STAGE. OWNERS’ PASSIVE RESISTANCE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, March 27. The coal crisis has reached an interesting stage. Mr Bruoe, the Federal Prime Minister, and Mr Bavin, the Premier of New South Wales, will confer together to-niglrt. Great pressure is being brought to bear by tradespeople in the coal areas to have the dispute settled. It is proving ruinous to them. The miners’ Parliamentary representatives are daily making fervent appeals to reopen the mines, as the miners’ families are starving. In the meantime the coal owners are passively resisting. They declare that they do not want Government interference. DEMAND FOR COAL IN HOMELAND SOUTH AMERICAN MARKETS RECAPTURED. (British Official Wireless.) Received March 28, 9.5 a.m. RUGBY, March 27. During an address at the annual meeting of the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce, Mr Mordey stated that there was a more general demand for coal at home and abroad. The exports of iron and steel manufactures had increased by 500,000 tons last month, and four of the largest steel works in South Wales had been reopened and would provide employment for several months. South American markets had been recaptured and great strides were being made in the Mediterranean and other markets. RELIEF~OF DISTRESS. LORD MAYOR’S FUND TO CLOSE SHORTLY. (British Official Wirelesss). Received March 28, 9.5 a.m. RUGBY, March 27. The Lord Mayor of London has decided to close shortly the fund for the relief of the distressed in the mining areas. At the present time the donations to the fund amount to £770,000, which,, with an equal contribution from the Government, brings its total to £1,540,000.
