AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SPORTS AT SHOWGROUNDS. LAY’S JAVELIN THROW. MISS BARRON SUCCESSFUL. L_ ' * \ An excellent programme of events was provided at the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s sports meeting held on the Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon, but the attendance was disappointing. Visiting competitors included S. Lay (Hawera), Australasian champion javelin thrower who succeeded in breaking his record of 205 ft. llins. by 10ft. 6m. T. Oakley (Masterton) arrived in time to compete in two cycle races and had little difficulty in winning both from the scratch mark. Owing to illness, Miss Norma Wilson (Gisborne) was unable to compete. Splendid performances were put up by Miss M. Barron (Foxton) in the ladies’ running events and in a 100 yards challenge race Miss Barron beat Miss P. Stewart (Wairoa) by 8 yards, the time being 11 4-6 secs. On the form shown, there was a free expression of opinion that Aliss Barron would beat Aliss Wilson over tho 100 yards. There is no doubt, however, that Miss Barron will, with careful training, be a very successful future competitor. Times in the other events were good and sound handicapping was responsible for close finishes. ADDITIONAL RESULTS.
