RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Racing at Bulls on Wednesday and The Hawke’s Bay fixture opens on Friday and concludes on Saturday. Northern sjiortsmen will be catered for by the Franklin meeting on Saturday—a one day meeting. Asleep made bids for the honours in tho Highweight Handicaps both days at Dannevirke, but was well beaten at both essays. Streamer, a Paper Money gelding, who runs in the interests of the Wellington sportsman, Mr E. Simpson, gave distinct promise in his outings at Dannevirke. Grey horses are not by any means common among gallopers at Dominion fixtures, but one of that colouring in Skill an aged gelding by Mira from Adroit, was a runner in the maiden at Dannevirke on the opening day. He did not, however, flatter Ins limited number of backers. Speedaway, a Campfire filly whose dam is a St. Paul mare, fell while contesting the Novice Stakes on the second day at Dannevirke, such having been due to Blue Mist crossing Ler. After the Novice Stakes had been Contested at on Thursday an inquiry was held concerning the fall of Speedaway, when the owner of Blue Mist was threatened with having his candidate placed on the schooling list. However, he assured the stewards that such action would be unnecessary ns he had tired of her and had turned her out. Blue Mist is a four-year-old mare by Heather Mixture who has always required a strong boy to handle her. Royal Lineage, wh> had run second to Imperial Spark at Woodville, again essayed open company both days at Dannevirke, but without success, fifth in a six horse race being his portion in the Hartgill Handicap for which the public had installed him favourite. The slipping of his saddle in the Cup Race probably played a part to that end for the Limond gelding had run a good race despite such. Gaze, who Had been off the scene of action for some time, made a re-entry into the active ranks in the Dannovirke Cup last Wednesday when the All Black gelding ran a good third. He promises to be in good order for the jumping season later on. Desert Lad, who had not had an outing in public since racing at Awapuni at Christmas time, was a runner in the Tahoraite Hack Handicap on the opening day at Dannevirke, but moved very scratchingly and never flattered his backers at any stage of the journey. Despite his having experienced a very bad jump out, which had entailed his giving the field in the Oringi Hack Handicap a big start, the Hymestra gelding Shortly finished third, some two lengths behind the winner. On the basis of that performance he came in for stronger support on the second day, but he retreated one placing at the finish, although he had got away better. Merry Mixture was sore when he went out to contest the Telephone Handicap on the second day of the Dannevirke fixture, yet ran a fair third after being last to turn for home. His connections gave the Heather Mixture gelding another outing in the final event, but he just failed to figure in the stake distribution. Merry Mixture would without doubt appreciate a softer track than what was offering at Dannevirke.

The Polydamon gelding Tanagra was due to have been put up at auction on the morning of the second day at Dannevirke, but his owner presumably withdrew him for he did no* come under the hammer. Tanagra had run a dead heat for third in the open sprint on tho opening day and he was then started twice oh the Thursday. He made the pace a merry one in the Hartgill Handicap, but was eventually beaten into fourth berth—a placing he again filled in the Glengarry Handicap after having almost come down to his knees at the jump out. Highly satisfactory nominations have been forthcoming for the autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, there being—exclusive of the two _ classic events —a total of 414 nominations, as compared with 878 last year. Incidentally, the response accorded tho local club quite surpasses the Wellington Club which attracted 878 nominations. The opening event at the autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club'—the Karere Hurdles —has attracted. the pleasing number of 19 entries of the very best class of jumper, Brigadier Bill and Red Fuchsia being probably being the only ones figuring therein who have not run * prominently over the battens to date this season. On the second day the ■ number is built up to 23 by the addition of Askari, Puwhero, American Pillar and Arkansas. The Prince of Wales Handicap on the opening day of the Manawatu autumn fixture has drawn the strong field of 30 prospective runners, the presence of such performers as Seatown, Joy Bird, Concentrate, In The Shade, Bright Glow, Joy King, Star Area, Ruanui The Hawk, Mint, Silver Paper, etc., ensuring a great race should they survive accept- . ance day. Of the three placed animals in the Awapuni Gold Cup at the Manawatu fixture twelve months ago—Star Stranger, Satrap and Mask—not one of the trio figures this year, although Laughing Prince and Hynanna, who were two of the unplaced division, are again included. With 18 prospective candidates such as -Nightmarch, Pegaway, Commendation, Rapine, Rapier, Yoma, Red Heckle, etc., also therein, the contest should prove .to be well worth going a long way to witness. The hack classes at the autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club have filled particularly well, the Autumn Plate (maidens) attracting 81, the Woodhe.v Handicap 44 and the Te Matai Handicap 25. On the second day the Lockwood Handicap, a hack event contested over six furlongs, has drawn a field of no less than 50. A similar state of affairs is fortunately evidenced in the open sprints, the Telegraph Handicap on tho opening day attracting 26 nominations and the Ston.yhurst Handicap on the second day 28. It is perhaps unfortiinate that classic events almost invariably draw somewhat limited fields, _ but it is nevertheless pleasing to witness an

increase in the fields for the 21st Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and the 25th Manawatu Stakes run on tho first and second days respectively at the autumn meeting of the local club. In the former event there are 10 nominations as compared with seven last year, while in the Stakes there are 20 as against 17 last year. Last year the Wellington R.C. raced on March 15 and 17 with Manawatu coming in after Easter, but an interval of only two days between the two fixtures this year will encourage owners to undertake the trip from far afield. For the convenience of owners and trainers a special train will be run from' Trentham at 6 o’clock on the Tuesday morning immediately following the races there, arriving at Palmerston North about 1 p.m. It is, however, to be hoped that rain wifi make its appearance before that time arrives, otherwise the hard tracks will play havoc with the horses. In any case it might well* have been preferable had Manowatu raced on the Thursday and Saturday and thus afforded tho active brigade a longer spell. J. McCombe left for Sydney on Friday with Crown Area and Moorgas.. It might be some time before he returns. •

Another passenger for Sydney by tho Marama on Friday was R. S. Bagby, who took with him High Disdain and Jet Black. High Disdain won at New Plymouth last month, and Jet Black is a promising maiden. Messrs J. C. and P. S. Gleeson’s brood mare Marriage Bell (Tea Tray —Gold Treasure), who has been in Australia for a couple of years, rt»turned from Sydney by the Maunganui last week. She was accompanied by a colt foal by Moabite, her first contribution to the stud book. Marriage Bell is a half-sister to Amythas, and was never raced. On noard the Kanowna, which was wrecked on Wilson’s Promontory, on the coast of Victoria, was the two-year-old Hongi, by Thespian, bred by Mr G. M. Currie, of Wanganui, who was disposed of in New Zealand for 75 guineas. He was being taken from Sydney to Echuca, ■ Victoria, for a spell. Describing the scene, Captain Mathers remarked: “We were able to recover some of our belongings from the upper deck cabins, and some odds and ends of gear, but the water was gaining rapidly, and we realised that the ship was doomed. The racehorse (Hongi) w r as screaming piteouslv. His stall was below decks, and I made several attempts to get near him, but he lashed out. viciously with his hoofs, and I had to abandon my attempts. I had no revolver with which to end his misery, and we had to leave him to his fate.” Limerick left Wellington on Friday for Sydney to take part in the autumn racing. He will commence his campaign at Rosehill. His first race will be the Rawson Stakes, and his next the Chipping Norton Stakes. He won both these races last season. There is a possibility of his contesting three races at Randwick, and it is hoped that he will meet Gothic in the All Aged Stakes, of one mile. A visit to Brisbane to contest the King’s Cup, which he won at Randwick a year ago, is on the cards, but much depends upon how he stands the trip. It is not likely that he will be able to meet Aussie in the Ormond Gold Cup at Hastings at the end of the autumn. F. D. Jones, of course, was in charge of Limerick, and he took with him also Paquito and Catkin. Paquito appears to be a very promising sort, but Catkin might not be seen at his best unless the tracks become soft. Limerick is said to be in great heart and condition.

For the sale of bloodstock bred by Mr W. H. Gaisford there was a good attendance of the sporting fraternity and many outride buyers were represented (says the Dannevirke News). Top price was realised for the brown mare Colorina, which went to Mr W. Shirriffs (Awapuni), the price being 100 guineas. Sales were made as follow:—Yearlings: Bay colt, foaled November 13, 1027,’ Royal Divorce — Phillipa, Phillipa, by Clarenceaux, out of Ohiwia, by Elysian, out of Wairakau by Cyrenian, out of Waiorongo- ' mai by Hotchkiss, Mr M. When Newbury pulled up bleeding from the nostrils after the first division of the High-weight at Canterbury Park on February 9 (says a Sydney writer) it gave his trainer, George Price, a shock. He regarded him as a sound horse, for he had shown no indication of. weakness in the past. That the trouble was deep-seated, however, was evidenced afterwards, when the horse was in a bad way. He has taken several days to pick up, and as soon as he has recovered sufficiently to travel he will be sent back to New Zealand. Some horses bleed from mere superficial causes, such as a small clot of blood in the head. It’ doesn’t harm them constitutionally, and they can often show their best form after a bleeding attack. But Newbury’s affection is thought to be in the lungs, and it is doubtful if he will race again. Geo. Price thought Newbury wa3 doing so well, and regarded him as such a sound horse, that at this, his first start, he supported him mildly. The horse carried a little money at starting price, thus affording a chance of a return if he ran into a place. But, of course, the bleeding" attack' put him right out of court soon after he leapt out of the barrier, ahead of the field. _ The attack was all tho more surprising to his connections because in recent work he had sprinted smartly, and had pulled up after each effort sound in wind and limb. His visit to Australia has thus been a costly venture. In New Zealand he was a useful performer, and much was expected of him here m suburban company. Consequently he has been a ,cojuplete disappointment.
