GARRISON BAND.

RETURN FROM CONTEST. After participating in the competition at Wanganui, the Palmerston North Garrison Band arrived back shortly after five o’clock last evening. A warm welcome was extended by a largo crowd, and the band played two selections in the Square. As ite president,* Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., extended congratulations to the band on its performances, which, taking into consideration the short period Mr Franklin had been its conductor and tho number of junior players, wore quite gratifying. Under the baton of Mr Franklin, the band had made sound progress, well worthy of the approbation of the townspeople. Mr Nash wished tho band every success and hoped that in t{io future it would take part in other contests, as he was sure that, in a short while the band would be extremely successful competitor's.

In returning; thanks, Mr Franklin said that he was very pleased with tho band, and he had not yet met a finer lot of men. Their conduct the whole time had been exemplary. The conductor of the St. Kilda Band had told the speaker that ho had been trying for six years to win the contest, and had added that the Garrison Band’s playing had met with very favourable comment. Mr Franklin thanked the public for the support given the band, ■and said that he felt sure that in a short time they would hve reason to be proud of the band. On the call of Mr Nash, cheers were then given for the bandsmen.
