OBITUARY.

MR ROBERT BROWN. Another of the early pioneer settlers of New Zealand passed away yesterday when the death occurred at Colyton of Mr Robert Brown, in his ninetieth year. The late Mr Brown was born at West Tamar, Tasmania, and came to the Dominion at the time of the famous Gabriel’s Gully gold rush. When returning to Tasmania some time later, Mr Brown was shipwrecked on the Tasmanian coast. He returned to New Zealand in the early eighties, and after short periods spent at Wanganui, Kororiki and, Makin.o settled on the Midland Road, Colyton. where he spent almost forty years. A hardy old pioneer, a just man who was highly respected by all who knew him, liis passing is regretted by his many Jriends. , Mr. .Brown was very proud of his connection with the Reform Party, and he took an .exceptionally keen interest in politics. Deceased was predeceased by four eons (one of whom was killed in the war) and one daughter. The remaining members of the family are: Mr Robert Brown, of Westmere, Wanganui ; Mr Peter Brown, who is at present returning from a holiday spent in Austalia; Mrs E. Hubner, of Makino, Feilding; Mrs J. Hislop, of Eketahuna, and Mrs F. Adamson, of Midland Road, Colyton. Mrs J. Craven, of Collingwood Street, Palmerston North, is a niece of deceased. The funeral is to leave Mrs Hubner s residence on Sunday for the Feilding cemetery. REV. L. THOMPSON. Rev. L. Thompson, M.A., whose death occurred at Auckland yesterday, came to New Zealand from Lerwick, Shetland, with his parents in 1875, and had resided for the greater part of his life in Invercargill. As a boy he attended North and Central Invercargill public schools, and later the Southland High School, having a brilliant scholastic career. . After a brief term as teacher with the Southland Education Board, Mr Thompson proceeded to Otago University where ho took his B.A. degree and later his M.A. degree with honours in mathematics. During lus term at Otago hi attended the Theological Hall and passed his examinations for the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, his first charge being North Taien. After some years spent m that district, he was called to Carterton which he had to resign later owing to ill-health. Always possessed of indomitable co ur ag® and energy, he recovered his health sufficiently to take up duties with the Wellington Presbytery and was last stationed at Island Bay. Acting under medical advice he finally resigned from pastoral activities and in Janu arv last proceeded to Auckland whe e he entered a private hospital, despite thebest of medical skill and atten known.
