BRITISH COLUMBIA.
RETALIATION AGAINST UNITED STATES. The British Columbia Legislature is making definite plans to shut out United States fruit and vegetables in retaliation for the proposed Hoover tariff against Canadian lumber products. Individual provinces of Canada cannot impose Customs duties, but the same result may be obtained by providing for an inspection fee against every single article imported from any country. Thus British Columbia may be able to offer Australia a market for oranges and other fruits, and at the same time the Commonwealth would be asked for more sympathetic treatment of British Columbia lumber.
