RIVER CONSERVATION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I see that Cr. Milverton caused 'quite a consternation at the last meeting of the Borough Council when he questioned the excessive expenditure on Mcßae’s' Bend by the River Board. “Cr. Hodgens said he was not going to suffer in silence,” and then apparently collapsed; while Cr. Fitzherbert got very excited and made wild statements about Hokowhitu and the gasworks having been threatened by the erosion at Mcßae’s Bend, which is of course all moonshine. I have often been along Mcßae’s Bend and have never seen any serious erosion there. In any case, it is practically as far from the gas plant as Timbuctoo. It is curious that the country settlers with their long river frontages only contribute £lB4 in rates, yet the Palmerston North ratepayers contribute £2890 approximately. The Mayor evidently saw that the cat was getting out of the River Board bag, and shut up Cr. Milverton by going on to other business.—l am, etc,, B.F. ROBIN.
