“PUSHED OUT.”

ANTARCTIC AREAS. AUSTRALIA’S CLAIM. “Australia is steadily being pushed out of the Antarctic continent, in which geographically and scientifically she should have a great interest,” declared Commander Moyes in a lecture to the Royal Society'of Tasmania. Commander Moyes was a member of both tho Mawson expeditions, and one of tho Shackleton expeditions to the Antarctic.- He pointed out that Adelo Land, which Mawson had examined, had gone to the French. Bouvet Island was gone, and although the Ross dependency was nominally under the control of New Zealand as part of the British Empire, only Norwegians used it and drew profit from it. The question was often asked, “Of what use is the Antarctic and Antarctic exploration?” Was there not ground for much thought in tho fact that in the past four years or so Norwegians had extracted profits worth half a million from the Ross Sea sector alone? He believed that Australians should share in that, and that an Australian whaling expedition to the Ross Sea should- bo equally successful.
