RACING AT DANNEVIRKE.

HARTGILL HANDICAP TO ROWLEY

VAST ACRE WINS THE SPRINT.

Brilliant weather again prevailed for the second day of the Dannevirke Racing- Club’s autumn fixture when there was a very fair attendance of the public. Totalisator business was brisk throughout the day, the sum of £12,425 being handled, as compared with £10,387 for the corresponding day last year, making a total of £26,364 for the fixture, as against £21,862 in 1928—an increase of £4502.

Honours in the Hartgill Handicap—the principal event yesterday— went to Rowley, with Locarno once again filling the rolo of runner-up, and the first day’s handicap winner, High Court, in third place. In the Glengarry Handicap—the open sprint—Vast Acre and Dobbin again filled the first two places as on the opening day, with Pliinmerton third, tho placings and order of betting being according to the numerical positions in the raco book. BREAK O’ DAY WINS AGAIN. Tho first day’s winner, Break o’ Day (£270), came in for stronger support in the second Highwcight Handicap, although there was good money for Novar (£225) and Bracman (£213). Break o’ Day went to the front from Mandarine and Bracman passing through the straight, but Asleep moved up into second position going along tho back, where Birkbeck also made a bid to join the leaders, only to again drop back. Crossing tho top the favourite was still filling the rolo of pacemaker and ho landed into tho straight ahead of Asleep and Birkbeck. At the distance Novar joined in and he and Break o’ Day fought out tho finish, tho favourite prevailing by three parts of a length with Bracman a length away. Then came Birkbeck und Mandarine with Asleep whipper-in. ST. MELBA WINS AT LAST. Mothplane (£515) and Tunbridge (£340) dominated the betting market in the Novice Stakes, but St. Melba, who ranked among the lesser fancied candidates, gave an improved performance, with an apprentice horseman up, to lead tho other .pair home. Austerity and Mothplane were smartest to begin from Tunbridge, but with less than a furlong gone St. Melba was piloting tho field, Mothplane, Priinax and Streamer being his nearest attendants. Tunbridge came up in the straight and a fighting finish saw St. Melba get homo by a head from the unlucky Mothplane, with Tunbridge a neck back. Streamer and Austerity were next to finish. At the threo furlong post Specdaway fell, but his rider, A. Jenkins, escaped injury. ROWLEY TAKES BIG HANDICAP. All 6ix acceptors went to the post in the Hartgill Handicap in which Royal Lineage (£545) was installed a pronounced favourite, High Court (£353) and Briar Root (£270) being next in demand. Tanagra dashed to the fiont from Royal Lineage, High Court and Locarno, but when on the courso proper Locarno moved up to Royal Lineage and the order passing the four furlong post was Tanagra, well clear of Royal Lincago, and Locarno, with Briar Root and High Court together, and Rowley in the rear, ’ianagra was holding a four length advantage crossing tho top, but the field slowly closed up and tho runners were in a rough lino at the distance. Rowley and Locarno finally went to the front und tho former stayed on the better to win by a neck from Locarno, who thus added his second minor placing at the fixture. Three lengths back came High Court, just ahead of Royal Lineage and Briar Root. SUCCESS OVERDUE. Delude and Repay were defections from the lapuata Hack Handicap and, in their absence, Topere (£445) and Warfille (£435) were tho favoured candidates, but Kiriana, who had given evidence earlier of getting on the winning list, without actually attaming this position, took the major placmg from Warfille after a keen contest. Volplane and Warfille led from Cioyne over the early portion but at the entrance to the straight -Kiriana came up to join issue and secure the verdict from Warfille by a neck with Volplane half a length back. Aurora Borealis was fourth with Cioyne and Topere next, the favourite having been in the rear of tho field throughout. A STOLEN RACK. With Patearoa and Australis absentees from the Telephono Hack Handicap, there were but five runners to contest the event, Shortly (£396) and Delude (£368) being preferred to Monetize (£252). Delude and Monetize were the leadors from the barrier with Skybird and Shortly in behind. They raced in that order into the straight, Delude appearing to have the raco in his keeping at the distance, but T. Green, on Monetize, came with a strong finishing effort to beat tho top weight homo by three parts of a length with Merry Mixture, who had been last to turn for home, a length and a half back. Shortly wad fourth. A PROMISING PILLY. The field in the- Kaitoke Juvenile Handicap was far from a 6trong class one and, on tne basis of Te Awlia’s performance on tho opening day, the public backed the Lord Quex filly down to a short price, she being entrusted with £671 as compared with Gay Virginia’s £235. Lady Day and To Awha were first out at the barrier rise, but crossing tho top San Quex ran into second position, while Gay Virginia had deposed Lady Day before the straight was reached. In the run to the winning post Te Awha was never troubled to score by two lengths from San Quex, there being a gap of three lengths to Gay Virginia. Another length back came Killogie. FAVOURITE TAKES THE SPRINT. Vast Acre (£727) was backed down to a very short price in the Glengarry Handicap, Dobbin (£307) being the next in demand. Dobbin jumped out smartly, but almost immediately gave way to Plimmerton, who led the favourite and Dobbin across the top and into tho straight. When straightened out Dobbin was compelled to come out from tho rails and in tho run homo just failed to reach Vast Acre, the favourite prevailing by a neck with PHinmerton in third place a couple of lengths back. Tanagra, who had stumbled at the jump out and had thereafter tailed tho field, got up to fill fourth place ahead of Willow Wai. A GREAT RACE. Skybird and Boundary failed to put in an appearance in the Tiratu Hack Handicap—tho final event —in which Goodwill and Australis (£493) wound up equal favourites in the best betting race for the day, there being however, but 10 tickets separating them from Archeria, Goodwill and Imperial Fame led along the back straight from Archeria, Australis and Tutira, the last named running into third berth crossing the top. Goodwill and Imperial Fame were first to straighten up and a great race ensued between the pair and Archeria, Goodwill managing to hold off Archeria to win by a head with Imperial Fame a similar distance back. Three parts of a length away came Merry Mixture with Australis right up. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
