FARMING AND COMMERCIAL

WANGANUI WOOL SALES. PRICES FIRM AT AUCKLAND RATES. Per Press Association.WANGANUI, Feb. 28. The wool sale ended to-day with prices firm on Auckland rates. The official range of prices is as follows: Halfbred — d. d.

BROKERS’ REPORTS. DALGETY AND CO., LTD. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report that the total offering at the Wanganui wool sale on Wednesday was 25,000 bales the wool catalogued being generally low to medium topmaking sorts with a few giood well skirted clips. Competition was in no way animated, English buyers being the principal operators. The wools were not \ery suitable for the Continental trade, being rather on the long side, and very mixed in quality. Many of the lots catalogued for the market were spoiled by faulty get up and growers will bo well advised to pay more attention to classing and skirting of medium to good wools. We expected the market would rule very firm on the last Auckland and Wellington prices, but unfortunately, through lack of competition, results must be quoted in buyers’ favour. When compared with last Wanganui sale, we at the time of writing, make prices for low and medium wools fully 2d down with good and super lots 2d to 23d lower. There was no life in the sale and, as previously stated, Bradford were the chief operators in fleece wool with France bidding fairly freely for best bellies, pieces and lam be’ wool. The large quantity of inferior pieces, bellies, lambe and locks wero mostly taken by Local scourers. Passings were heavy mainly owing in our catalogue to valuations not being reached. Although bidding was in no way spirited, it must be recognised that the quality and condition of the offering wa6 in the main inferior and only suitable for topmaking purposes. We see no reason why the market should come down and are inclined to the opinion that the lowest level has been reached. As usual our binned and reclassed lots brought strong competition and sold at remarkably good rates. Tho following are some of tho prices quoted: EHP, 11 bales H 14d, 20 bales E 133 d, 7 bales W 13fd; CHL/F, 4 bales crossbred 13Jd; GGT/K, 4 bales H 14d, 14 bales E 13|d; PWD 6 bales E 13d; FAM/Riverside, 7 bales’E 133 d; ACV/ B, 7 bales crossbred 12d: line over 66, 17 bales H 14fd, 21 bales AE 133 d; B diamond B, 25 bales E 133 d, 7 bales lambs 16d; line over AK, 9 bales crossbred Ramahiku, 5 bales halfbred 16id, 7 bales crossbred A 143 d, 4 bales crossbred B 13d; RJM/O, 4 bales E 12id; TEAWA, 5 bales halfbred 16id, 4 bales crossbred A 133 d, 8 bales Lns. 16Jd; MO/ H 6 bales crossbred E 13^d; N and W, 4 bales E 123 d; SARI, 0 bales H 123 d;

Mr Everett Brown, president of tho Chicago Livo Stock Exchange, stated today that there had been a shrinkage of 1,375,000 dollars in the value of livo stock in the United States in tho last six months. Diet propaganda was destroying tho meat business, and prices for beef cattle had dropped about four dollars por 1001 b. Mr Brown added that the demand for beef had been so curtailed that consumption in some sections was 25 per cent, under normal. Some experts asserted that tho markets were clogged with beef which could not bo sold. Mr Brown also pointed out that there was a great change in the public diet in progress; meat was cut to a point 45 per cent, less than ten years ago.

The pig entry was not large, there being about 150 fats and 28 stores. Baconers were easier by about 5s a head on last week’s rates, and porkers suffered almost as great a doeline. Stores met with only a fair demand.
