LAYING THE ODDS.
FINE OF FIVE POUNDS. Per Press Association. ' AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. “He was pretty cheeky all right, laying tho odds right in front of the totalisator house on the racecourse,” was tho comment of Chief Detective Hammond at the Police Court to-day, in referring to Charles Herbert Geard, who pleaded guilty to a charge of having laid totalisator odds. Counsel said that Geard had never been in any trouble before. He had met with an accident at work and was at present on reduced wages. “That is quite so,” said Air Hammond. “He was only a silver bettor.” Geard was fined £5 and allowed 14 days to pay.
