INTENSE COLD

NONE OF COMPETITORS COMPLETE COURSE.

George Michel of Paris, the last remaining contestant in the fifteen mile AVrigley Marathon swim in Lake OnTario, was taken from the water at 10.12 p.m., after completing twelve and a-lialf miles. His forced withdrawal leaves 35,000 dollars of prize money unawarded, owing to the stipulation that tlio course must be comPl< \Vith little more than three and ahalf miles to go, Ernest Vierkoettter, the German who swam the English Chanel, was taken from the water, leaving only four. Three gave up, leaving Michel the only survivor. He went on only at his trainer’s coaxing, showing distress and moving slowly. Vierkoetter was unable to move. His eyes were closed and he was apparently unconscious. It took three boats to get him aboard the Red Cross vessel. Tlio intense cold is blamed for the failure of the swimmers to finish.
