SANDON NOTES

TE KAWAU SUB-UNION

(From Our Own Correspondent),

SANDON, Sept. 6.

The curtain having fallen on the 1928 Rugby season in this district, a few notes on representative fixtures will perhaps bo appreciated. The first game played by the seniors was against Oroua at the Winter Show, To Kawau, winning by 21 points to 3. A return game played at Kimbolton was also won, the margin being 17 points to 6. Playing Manawatu B at Sanson for the Wallace Cup, tlio homo team were somewhat lucky to win, the score being 18 to 12, and in the final game Rangitikei were defeated by 13 to 7. The juniors played a drawn game at Awahuri against Manawatu thirds, defeated Oroua juniors at Sanson by 24 points to 6, and closed the season by defeating Manawatu thirds at Palmerston North by 9 to 3.

Of the senior players, Ken Marsh did good service as full-back, although his play in shield fixtures had been erratic. This position against Oroua at Kimbolton was filled by B. Gust, but lack of confidence was his weakness. Of tlio threequarter fine, Roy Scott at centre was always more than useful, and it is to bo regretted that this player lias to nurse a weak knee. The wing men all. did yeoman service—T. Amadio and G. Hartley. Against Manawatu B and Rangitikei, Amadio not being available his place was ably filled by Rex. McKClvie. The fiveeighths, G. Goldfinch and K. Drummond for the first two games and the former not being available his place was filled by M. Moffatt for the others. The form shown by this lad is very promising. Koora Drummond was well in the picture in all of the games lie played. 11. Fuller did solid service at half-back in the first three games and against Rangitikei in the absence of Drummond went back to first five-eighths. His place behind tho scrum in this game was ably filled by Graham Richardson.

Tho wing-forward position was in the hands of L. Staile. This forward has played well in many games in this locality, but novel- bettor than in the games against Manawatu B and Rangitikei. He was selected to play for Manawatu against Bush, but was unfortunately not available. A few garnos in big company should make “Lou” one of tho best. Tho pack came in for much alteration during tho season, but could not have been much improved on after tho showing against Manawatu B and Rangitikei. In these games the Ilui Mai hookers, L. Tattle and I. Edwards, were getting more than an even share of tho ball from the scrums. Tho other positions in the scrum were filled by Rivers,, J. Stratford, M. Hunt, D. Cameron, G. Hill, Henderson and Scanlon, while in tho game against Oroua at Kimbolton, I. Edwards had P. Richardson with him in the front row, L. Tattle playing in that game in the back row. Perhaps the most consistent forward in the pack was L. Tattle and it is remarkable the amount of work this player does. Of the remainder tho palm rests with “Ilec” Rivers, of tho Oroua Downs Club, although all were more-or less in the picture. They all have good reason to be will pleased with their eiforts in the 1928 season. I was not fortunate enough to see tho juniors p!*y but their team was a good even lot and I will close my notos by saying well done boys and best wishes for success next year.
