VALEDICTORY
PRESENTATIONS TO MR C. H CLEM.
Mr C. H. Clem, for the past six years a teller in tho Bank of Australasia, Palmerston North, has boon transferred to tho Melbourne branch of tho bank, on promotion. He will leave for Auckland this evening to connect with the Australian steamer.
Yesterday morning, Mr Clem was farewelled by the bank staff, when Mr J. H. Rickman presented him with a handsome suitcase suitably inscribed. Ho referred to Mr Clem’s sterling worth, both as an officer and as an allround sportsman, and expressed the general regret that all felt at losing Mr Clem. He wished him good luck on his return to the Commonwealth.
Mr Clem was also the recipient of further presntations, at an informal gathering of fellow sportsmen last evening. On behalf of the friends present, Mr H. Essex presented him with a solid silver jewel case, mounted with -a kiwi, and suitably inserbed. Mr Essex expressed the regret that all felt at the departure of one who durng his sojourn in Palmerston North had made so many firm friends. Mr Earle Wimsett, president of the Manawotu Boxing Association, presented Mr Clem, tho association’s treasurer, with a solid silver cigarette case as a memento from his fellow members of the executive.
In reply, Mr Clem said that the presentations were a great surprise to him. He would always cherish them and ho hoped that he would have tho chance of renewing his local friendships at some future date. Members of tho Linton Street Tennis Club, the Manawatu Golf Club and the Manawatu Boxing Association also paid their tributes.
For the past six years, Mr Clem has taken a very active part in all local sport, and last year was secretary of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association and among the first ten on the Manawatu centre ladder. He was also a member of the Palmerston North Club’s team for several years. A member of the Manawatu Golf Club also, ho won the May medal in the bogey competition this season and is a promising player. Elected treasurer of the Manawatil Boxing Association upon the recent resuscitation of that body, ho rendered invaluable work on the executive.
