ALLEGED MURDER.
HARD IE BEFORE THE COURT. Per Press Association. NASEBY, Sept. 5. Tho-.preliminary hearing of a charge against William John Hardie, a young man of 23 years, of murdering Joe Leung Shum, at the Kyeburn diggings on July 17 took place before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., here to-day. Mr F. B. Adams appeared for the Crown and Mr A. C Hanlon for the defence. Ivocal interest was intense and lii*die paid the full price of notoriety, being the cynosure of curious crowds at the railway station and Court House. The two principal witnesses, Dr. \\ . S. Eudy and Sue Pee, a Chinese employee of Shum, were heard this afternoon. , Sue Pee was in tho box for two and a half hours as an interpreter was necessary. The doctor gave evidence that five bullet wounds were sustained by Shum, and Sue Pee deposed to having seen accused on the claim on the day of the murder and also that Shum had told him who had killed him. FINDING AT INQUEST. Tho adjourned inquest on Joe Leung Shum was concluded before tho Coroner, Mr George Reid, J.P., and a jury of four. Dr. Eudy's evidence before Mr Dixon was taken as given, and the jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death as a result of gunshot pounds inflicted by a person or persons unknown.
