SCHOOL HOURS.

UNDER LOCAL SUMMER TIME. COMMITTEE SEEKS INFORMATION. The question of the authority of a school committee to open and close the school earlier in the event of the local daylight saving measure being passed by Parliament was discussed by the West End School Committee last evening when it was decided to obtain information on the subject. “In tho event of local daylight saving being carried, what attitude can wo take up? Can we regulate the opening and closing of the school?” asked Mr G, Tremaine. “I suppose we can open the school an hour earlier and close it an hour later.” He pointed out that daylight saving could not be a success unless all sections cooperated. Mr A. E. Blackbom'n: I think the committee has the power to alter the closing and opening time of the school. The chairman (Mr C. H. Whitehead) : We would be quite justified, I think, in opening the school earlier. The secretary, Mr G. Lyne, was instructed to enquire from the Wanganui Education Board what authority the School committee actually possessed in the matter. Mr Tremaine suggested that the chairman endeavour to arrange for a meeting of tho Combined School Committee’s Association, should the local daylight saving measure be carried, in order to discuss the position. This Mr Whitehead agreed to do.
