MARTON RACES.

HANDICAP TO QUEEN ARCH. BLIMP TAKES THE SPRINT. AWAPUNI’S GOOD DAY. Wintry, rattier than spring like conditions prevailed for the meeting of the Marton Jockey Club yesterday, a co southerly wind which blew into the stands making matters most uncomfortable for patrons. There was nevertheless a good attendance of patrons and betting was fairly brisk throughout, the sum of £10,273 being handled for the day as compared with £16,580 last year.

The heavy naturo of the track proved an upsetting factor to form and there were several surprises,, a warm fayounto Bisox being beaten into third place in tlio r ‘j ,di<-ar H- >!v northerner, Queen Arcli. and Rovni Mint—last, year’s winner. The Railway Handicap—the open sprintiva.i productive of a still greater surprise. Blimp winning from the better fancied Lady’s Boy and Oration, the victory of the Gasbag gelding bringing Awapuni; its fourth success for the day, Pangolin, JNloutoa Treasury and Trouble previously having scored for this centre. A CLOSE CALL. The good field of 18 runners was presented in the Trial Plato, Cashier, Merxcis, Balloon, Vaux, Rillct, Tangerim and an unnamed Gold Sout maro being numbered as defections. Tlio Aucklander, Maunacna (£261) and Dry Area (£201) were m strong demand, Dcrmod (£149) and Upoko (£126) being next in request. An lndiilerent dispatch saw Dry Area, Dermod and Inflame smartest to begin from Upoko and Black Maire, and they raced across the top in that order, Dry, Area being actually first to turn for home. With heads straightened out Dermod ran to the front, but at the distance Marica, The Warden and Otauru Lass went in pursuit of the leader and he had to bo ridden out over tho last 5U yards to prevail by a neck from Marica, who was a long neck in advance of llie Warden. There was a short interval to Otauru Lass with Black Maire and Upoko ahead of the bunch. A PROCESSION. Gala Day, Red Bank and Quadalquiver were absentees from the Rata Hack Hurdles, leaving 11 candidates to contest tho event. Olympic (£245) was a shade stronger fancied than Cohesion (£218) and Beaumont (£211), tho betting being, however, fairly well distributed. Beaumont, who was making his first appearance over fences, was first out from the barrier, Hangawera, Lieutenant Bill, Cohesion and Ruby Ring being next in attendance. Passing through the straight Cohesion went to tho front and gradually drew clear from Beaumont with Ruby Ring, Waltzer, Hangawera and Lieutenant Bill running in a bunch, llie leader steadily drew away and was halt a dozen lengths clear of Beaumont crossing tho top, Lieutenant Bill being a further three lengths back with Waltzer next. Co--1 lesion, who was jumping correctly, went on to win comfortably by 10 lengths, Lieutenant Bill gaining vet another third place, three lengths behind Beaumont. Olympic, who had been tailing the field for the early portion of the journey, was in fourth place another three lengths back, Hangawera and Ruby Ring attending him home. Polyphemus lost his rider at the first fence. PANGOLIN’S GOOD EFFORT. The splendid field of 17 runners went to tho post in the Spring Hack Cup, the six defections corning from the minimum brigado in Mi<s3 Mercia, Gold Bag, Monsogne, Tanagra, Shining Star and Gasnappcr. Following a break by Pangolin, tho field got away in good line, positions undergoing quick changes in tho first furlong, hut by the time tho half mile post had been readied Lady’s Boy had taken command from Kilmezzo, Holus Bolus, Abisogne, Taku Tama, Teri, Pangolin and Flying Shot, Singleton being at the rear of the field. Crossing the top Lady’s Boy looked all over a winner, hut with heads turned for homo Pangolin caine through to gradually overhaul Lady’s Boy and win nicely by a short length, there being a gap of two lengths to Singleton, who did remarkably well to get up to take third place. Gold Cure, who had come up at tho turn, was fifth with Teri, Abisogne, Kilmezzo and l’aku Tama next to finish. TWO-YEAR-OLD PARADE.

was, however, ahlo to got froo and sho set out in pursuit of Ivmghtliko to wrest tho load just short of tho post and win by a neck. Tanagra was third three lengths back, Miss. Mercia and Cain-mor-. being next to finish. BLIMP’S SURPRISE. Tea Time, Staghunter, Miss Pat, Keddar, Archcen and Taku Tama wore absentees from tho Railway Handicap in which King Lu (£575) and Lady s Boy £410) wero preferred to Oration , there being a wide margin m the betting. Town Bird jumped to tho front in company with Saggitarms and Oration at the barrier riso with Tho Immigrant and Blimp in close attendance. Oration ran to tho front crossing tho top to land into tho straight well clear of Saggitarms, Lady s Boy, Town Bird, Blimp and Iho Immigrant. Tho leader was strongly challenged at tho distanco by Lady’s Boy and llie issue promised to lie between the pan until Blimp camo with a great finishing effort to win from Lady’s Boy by a neck with Oration threo parts of a length away. Saggitarius, Tho Immigrant, King Lu and Ivosk wore tho next to finish, tho lastnamed having run about considerably. PALE STAR AGAIN. For tho final event, Limosa, Discourse, Kawhakina, Vigilance, Court Jestor, l'lying Shot, Shining Star and Metellus were withdrawn, thereby detracting considerably from the interest of tile race. 1 ale Star, who had registered a good performance when he won at Dannevirke, was sent, out a very warm order, being entrusted with 710 tickets, Kindle (£503) and Mount Shannon (£303) being the medium of fair support. There was some crowding as the field went out of the straight, lioburant leading from Kindle, Wet Paint, Calitho and Pale Star as they went round tho turn, tho last named having run a shade wide. Approaching tho half mile Vexatious went to the front to open up a gap from Roburaut, Caiitlie, Kilbutn, Kindle and Palo Star. Tho leader, however, came back to his field approaching tho entrance, Kilburn being just in front of Palo Star and Vexatious as they straightened up. In tlio run homo Palo Star and Kilburn drew clear away, the favourite prevailing nicely by a length without being seriously troubled Calitho was third eight lengths away with Mount Shannon, Roburant and Vexatious ahead of Kindle and Wet Paint. the DETAILED RUNNERS.

A two-year-old parade was held prior to the principal event when an attractive field of 10 youngsters went to tho post to race home over two furlongs. They were sent awav In quite a good line, Francolin, Hunting Day and Pont D’Or being tho smartest to find their feet. Francolin saw out tho distance a shade the better than Hunting Day, who nevertheless put up an excellent showing. Grand Jury finished well to fill third while Equitant got up to take fourth place from Courtlike. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN.

Bisox (£676) was a firm favourite for the Marton Handicap, Royal Mint (£341), Nukumai (£330) and Queen Arch (£300) being tho next best backed. Tlio field qf 13 runners —Iloromea, Princess Ronnio (defunct) and Wanderlust having been withdrawn —was sent away in good lino, Orazone racing to pilot tho runners through tho straight, Shining Armour, Bisox, Vivo, Brigadier Bill, ’To ‘ ICoroke, Queen Areli and Captain Gazoley being in closo order with Polonott and Nukumai bringing up the rear. Entering tlio back Vivo was taken to tlio front, while Polonott likewise moved forward into tho van, but before tho half milo post had been reached Captain Gazoley was disputing tho leadership with Vivo, Polonott, Queen Arch, Orazone, Bisox and Shining Armour being next in odrer. Tho favourite was hemmed in on tho rails rounding tho turn where Queen .Arch ran up to lead into tho straight from Shining Armour, Bisox, Royal Mint and ICilmiss. Witli heads straightened out Queen Arch shot away, Bisox being unable to make any impression. Royal Mint then came with a sustained run and tho leader bad to bo ridden out to prevail by a head, Bisox being a length and a-half back. Shining Armour was right up fourth with Kilmiss alongside. Then came Orazone, Brigadier Bill, Captain Gazoley, Nukumai, To Koroke, Vivo, Polonett and Nucleus. CHAPTER OF MISHAPS.

Quadalquiver and Excelsior were tho solo defections from tho Hunt Cup Steeplcchaso in which Scrap Iron (£350) wound up a firm favourite from Master Arch (£254) and Terehu (£239), but two of tho fancied trio wero finished with early. Del Sarto went out at tho first fence, while Scrap Iron and Mataipuko ran' olf at tho brush double in tho straight and the order going away from homo was Terehu, Troublo, Ilio Don, Master Arch, Bitola and Risk. Bonus went out at tho ben coop, the order at tho end of tho first round being Troublo, Master Arch, Terehu and Risk, The Don having come to grief at tho brush at the foot of the straight. Going away on tho second circuit Trouble opened .up a gap to | Risk and Master Areli, Terehu having faded out, but tho trio wore at short inter- ; vals half a milo from homo. Trouble and | Risk drew away from Master Arch and • the first named, landing first over the final i fence, had no difficulty in stalling oft a challengo from Risk, 10 lengths separating tho pair at tho finishing point. Mas- ( tor Arch was a further 12 lengths away, j Hacremai and Sts-niio being next to finish, j Bitola and Terehu completed tho journey, but wero a long way back. AWAPUNI AGAIN. Tho scratching pen was very much in evidence in the Electric Hack Handicap, . for of tho original field of 20 runners only , eight went to tho post. Knightlike. (£608) and Moutoa Treasury (£496) carried tho major portion of tho money, although . Foreign Fancy (£356) had a surprising number of admirers. Tho last named, from' i an insido position, was first out at the lifting of tho tapes, but was quickly joined by Knightlike wit’ll Miss Mercia and Moutoa Treasury at tho head of tho bunch. Rounding the top Tanagra moved up to tho leaders, Knightlike being just ahead of him at the ontranco with Foreign Fancy l and Moutoa Treasury next, tho last named being in bohind. Tho Awapuni candidate
