SWIMMING.

WRIGLEY MARATHON. (Australian Press Association.) Received September 6, 11.40 a.m. TORONTO, Sept. 5. Two hundred and seventy-five swimmers entered the water at eleven o’clock to-day to compte in tho Wriglev marathon. Ernest Vierkoelter, the German who swam the English Channel, and last year’s champion, took the lead early arid still held it after ton miles, by which time only five were left in the race for six prizes. Miss Gotterdam, of Seattle, tho only woman competitor, retired soon after tho start. George Young, the Canadian Catalina Channel conqueror, retired before eight miles had been covered. Ethel Hertle last week’s winner, withdrew before the start.
