Immediately afterwards Hardgreave made f, great run, Wetherill, Brisbane and Prentice carrying on. A scrum infringement on the line spoilt, the movement, and England cleared to half-way. Sullivan had a shot, 40 yards out which dropped under the goal. New Zealand were hjooking from most of the scrums. From a melee, Rees, Parkin and Erodsham broke through, and play switched to the other wing, where Gwynne jumped througth in an electrical run for Fairclough to score.—England 3, New Zealand 2. New Zealand retaliated and Peckhain bored right through. The blacks were forced out at the corner. Dufty had a free kick 50 yards out which fell just alongside the goal. The Englishmen immediately returned, and Dufty failed to clear Wetherill’s pass, and Erodsham was nearly over. Dufty cleared and Sullivan .attempted a kick at goal 60 yards out which just missed. New Zealand attacked, and Peckham lobbed a pass out to Goodall, who knocked on with a clear run in. Dufty had another kick 40 yards out which fell short. Both sides took turns at attack, the clever play of Parkin for England and Peckham and Wetherill for New Zealand, and the great kicking of Dufty and Sullivan, being greatly appreciated. Dufty had another shot 40 yards out, the ball falling just short. At half-time England was still in the lead. England attacked early in tho second spoil, but great tackling kept them out. Prentice exploited tho short punt behind the English back line, but all the time wonderful low. tackling was a feature of tho defence. Then England broke through. Fairclough got away, but his pass to Gwynna was blocked, and Dufty cleared. Then Parkin and Rees roused the crowd with wonderful scissors passing to send Askin away for a clear run in of 20 yards. A forward rush commenced by Wetherill and carried on by Goodall saw O’Brien score at the corner. Dufty’s angle kick dropped under the bar.—England 6, New Zealand 5.
