HAWKE’S BAY HUNT.

Annual meeting at Hastings; Hunt Cup to Highway; Kaiti wins Abbotsford Handicap; Royal Elm the Hack Hurdles.

THE RACING DESCRIBED. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Aug. 25. The Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s winter meeting was held to-day at Hastings in showery weather. There was a fair attendance and tho course was in fair condition. In the Riverslea Hunters’ Hurdles, Ponjola was in a good position throughout. Taking the lead half a milo from home, he won comfortably from Clirissarto. Ballyfarnon was fourth. Handy led for most of the way in the Park Hurdles Handicap, but he tired over tho last furlong, where Royal Elm and Braeman went past him. Royal Elm over the last hurdle was clear of Braeman and won comfortably. Crishna was fourth. In the Okawa Maiden Handicap Lucky Light took up the running early and was never headed. Charmaline was fourth. BIG RACE TO HIGH4VAY. In the Hunt Cup Steeples, Haumariro led to the last fence, where Highway, who was well back, overhauled him and went on to win. by a length. Askari ran off at the double brush the first time round and Terehu fell at the Southland ltoad brush. Hollycombe fell at the sod wall the last time round. Bedower was fourth. In the Abbotsford Handicap, Imperial Spark, Good Sport and Kaiti ran in that order to the straight, where Kaiti passed the leaders and went on to win nicely. Morose was fourth. Tresham beat Imperial Spark •on the post for second place by a head.

In the Soutra Hunters’ Hurdles Blajo and Stymie showed out. Running along the back Saturn went up and led Blajo and First Prince, Stymie going right hack. The order was much the same to the home turn where the field bunched. Then Saturn and Belgian Queen pulled away and a sterling finish resulted in Saturn winning by one length. First Prince was fourth. Spirollas’s rider fell off going out of the straight. Knightlike' and 44'a tollman were leading in the Horonui Hack Handicap after the field had settled down. They entored the straight together and in the run homo Arrow Boy and The Mug challenged, but Knightlike finished best and won by a length. Abisogne was fourth. EVENTS IN DETAIL. FREE ADVICE CASE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 25. A phase of the Free Advice case was discussed by the committee of tho New Brighton. Trotting Club yesterday when the Following motion was carried unanimously: “That tho club lodges with the New Zealand Trotting Association its emphatic protest against the. action of the secretary of the Trotting Association in approaching the appeal court judges by laying before them a circular unfairly dealing with tho case and embodying suggestions for a course of action for the appeal judges in tho Free Advice case.” CERTAIN STARTER. GOTHIC IN CAULFIELD CUP. MELBOURNE. Aug. 15. “Gothic is a certain starter in the Caulfield Cup,” - said Mr Sol Green, his owner, at the Bendigo races today.
