DEAD GIRL’S RING.
FIANCE’S SUCCESSFUL CLAIM.
ORDER AGAINST THE FATHER,
Judge Lias decided at the Sheffield County Court recently that a father had no right to retain his daughter’s engagement ring after her death, but must return it to her fiance.
i Frank Walton, cutlery manufacturer, successfully claimed the return of tlie ring, valued at £7O, from Thomas Elliott. The parents wished to keep the ring for sentimental reasons. It was stated that, although this was an entirely novel ease, Mr Justice McCardie had expressed an opinion that if marriage did not take place through deai,h, or through disability recognised by the law on the part of the person giving the ring, the condition was to bo implied that the ring was to be returnable.
Judge Lias said he .must pay respect to this opinion, and he was assisted by - the fact that the father desired to retain the ring for sentimental reasons which, could not be regarded by the law.
