COOK CELEBRATIONS

FRAMED PICTURE OF NAVIGATOR COMMONWEALTH’S GIFT. (Australian Press Association.) Received August 15, 12.5 p.m. HONOLULU, Aug. 14. In connection with the celebration of tho 150th anniversary of Captain Cook’s arrival, the Academy of Arts displayed a framed picture of Captain Cook’s ship, with Captain Cook’s photograph, which Sir Joseph Carrutliers, of New South Wales, has presented to Hawaii on behalf of tho Commonwealth.

The United States Secretary of War, Mr Dwight Davis, dined with the delegates. The British Consul, Mr Philps, will give a luncheon to the officials to-day.

It was in January, 1778, that Captain Cook, on his way from Tahiti to Behring Straits to ascertain whether there was a passago from tho Pacific to tho Atlantic, discovered tho archipelago which ho named the Sandwich Islands, in honour of his patron. On January 20 ho anchored his two ships, tho Discovery and tho Resolution, off Waimea, Kauai, and landed on tho same day. With tho discovery commenced tho recorded history of Hawaii, and it was soon followed by the beginning of American interests in tho islands. After Cook’s death of February 14, 1778, at Kcalakekua Bay, Hawaii, during his second visit, the two vessels sailed for the north-west coast, and there laid in a stock of furs, which, when they called at Canton on their way home, they sold at a very largo profit.
