LADIES’ HOCKEY

LOCAL MATCHES. Grounds "were in first: class order on Saturday when the second scries of matches in the sealed handicap competition were played, two games eventuating at tho fcjportsground and one at the High School. Bunnythorpe’s win of sixteen goals to mil was notched against a weak teum and play was straggly. The TcchmcalKongotea match was fairly even, some pretty work being done by tho forwards of both sides. Weet End Old Girls notched five goals against Oroua Downs, who were unable to open their account, but in the first 6pell they played a 3 well as their opponents. RONGOTEA v. TECHNICAL. Rongotea (purple and black). —Misses M. Sexton, A. . Sexton, D. Sexton, M. Robinson, F. Smith, E. Knight, R. Ransom, A. Dukor, S. West, M. Robinson, N. Robinson. Technical School (black and white).— Misses E. Berry, C. Smith, V. Larsen, K. Haselden, G. Kaye, J. Burrell, I. McDowell, M. Jones, R. Mortensen, M. Gulbransen, K. Dixon. Rongotea forwards early attacked and carried play into their 'opponents’ territory, but tho ball was forced over tho side-line. From a roll-in Rongotea secured and sent the ball into Technical net, but the shot was from outside tho circle.,From the twonty-five bully, Technical played brightly and with a sparkling movement shifted the theatre of play to tho fa.r end where for a time a struggle ensued in the circle, but a conceded corner cased the position. Play continued fast and open, the Technical forwards knocking tho leather about freely and sending it from one wing to the other in good style. Solid defence, however, kept Technical at bay and the country van soon assumed the offensive, playing with a dash and speed that gave them a marked ascendancy. It was not long before Miss Smith, seeing a suitable opening, passed to Miss D. Sexton who netted. Rongotea 1, Technical nil. Technical made a good effort to recover and for a time play was even, each side lio.ving a fair share of tho hall. IVliss K. Haselden was prominent in an attack for the school team, but the shot went behind. A fresh movement by the purples culminated when, following a scramble in the circle. Miss Smith secured and sent in a sparkling shot. Rongotea 2, Technical nil. This was the half-time score. In tho second spell fast hockey was immediately • evident. Technical sotting a great paco to which the other team replied with similar tactics. The ball went rapidly from one end of the field to the other until with the aid of a succession of line-outs Technical took it to tho Rongotea circle, whero the award of a penalty corner gave tho attack an excellent chance which, however, was not accepted Open play continued, but neither side could net, tho whistle blowing with the score Rongotea 2, Technical ml. Mr G. Blackbourn refereed.

BUNNYTIIORPE v. TOKOMARU

The teams lined out as follow: Bunnylhorpo (old gold and brown). Misses D. Turner, L. Mitchell, W. Ranson, J. McMurray, R. Duthie, W. and E. Robson, M. Godfrey, S. Thacker, N. Fowler, G. Burrell. Tokomaru (red and black). —Misses D. Webb G Webb B. Mackenzie, M. Campbell, J. Bree, Mrs 11. Parr, Misses H. Cameron, J. Stokes, P. Clarke, M. Webb (one short). This game was very one-sided, Bunnythorpe having a marked superiority that detracted from tho interest of the match. Early in the first spell Bunnythorpo assumed the ascendancy and they -never looked like losing it, tho forwards being able to keep the play almost entirely in their opponents’ territory. At half-time the score was eight goals to nil in favour of Bunnythorpo. Continuing their winning tactics in the second spell, tho golds added a similar number, eventually winning by 16 to nil. The Bcorers wore Misses W. Ranson (11), R. Duthie (2), J. McMurray, J. Mitchell and D. Turner. Mr I. Amos held the whistle. W.E.O.G. v. OROUA DOWNS.

This match was played at the High School grounds and in the first spell was fairly even, neither side being able to score. Several good movements wero initiated b yeach team, but failed to culminated by each team, but failed to culminwero the lighter, but by playing a fast game, and getting rid of the leather when the opportunity offered, were able to hold their own. In the second spell West End Old Girls asserted themselves and clearly showed that they were the more experieleven, netting five times. Shortly after the commencement Miss M. Scott scored 9 good shot. Other scorers were Misses E. Jones, S. Needham and Id. Hall. Just before tlio call of time Miss Scott netted a second time, the game ending W.E.O.G. 5, .Oroua Downs nil. Mr L. Duley refereed. REPRESENTATIVE GAME. OROUA DEFEAT TAIHAPE. The meeting of the ladies’ representative teams from the Oroua and 'laihapo associations on Victoria Park, Feilding, on Saturday, did not produce hockey of representative standard, the game being of a loose, scrappy nature. Victory rested with Oroua ladies by a two-goal to nil margin but a draw would have boon a better indication of tho strength of the teams, which were as follow, neither of them being at full strength:— _ , , Oroua (light blue) .—Misses Batchelor, Fergusson, Rankin, Clare, Managh, N. Davies, R. Davies, Iwikau, Paurirn, Cummerfield, Clapham. . Taihapo (dark blue).—Misses Gardener, Currie, N. Johnson, Fleet, H. Transom, Worsfold, D. Johnson, Thurston, E. Transom, B. Dowe, McCulloch. . . Oroua set up an attack from the initial bully and a rapid rush saw them storming tho Taihapo not, but tho shot went behind. A pretty dribbling rush by tho dark blues’ right wing, followed by a centring shot, saw Oroua in trouble but nothing camo of the attempt to net and tho light blues went out on tho offensive only to break down bcforo tho Taihape rear; guard. Miss Iwikau and Miss_ Paurini gave an exhibition of clover stick work and passing which carried the t ‘ff 10 t° tho ’Taihapo goal where Miss Currie was called upon for her best to keep her charge intact. In tho melee. in tho circle Miss Fleet sustained an injury and retired, Miss Pengclly coming on in her place for the dark blues. Aggressive play by tho Oroua forwards saw tho dark blues’ inner defences called upon to clqnr and a return attack to the Oroua circle resulted in Miss Rankin neatly glancing off two shots at tho net with her stick. Taihapo continued to press tho issue and a score looked certain until offside play brought ino hard pressed light blues rolief. A temporary raid on tho Taihapo circlo was made by Oroua, but tho attack was driven off and with a quick run up tho side line tho dark blue 3 transferred play to the opposite end of tho field where a centring shot was quickly accepted and . netted, the striker, however, giving “sticks” as sho shot, tho goal being disallowed. _ Halftime was called shortly after with the tcoro board blank.

T he resumption of play after tho interval saw another assault launched by tho dark blues, the drive reaching tho circlo but Miss Down’s shot went wide of the mark. From a roll-in Oroua camo away on tho attack, but. failed to finish the movement when in tho circle and wore compelled to retreat, bcforo a Taihapo counter-attack which rapidly shifted play. to tho Oroua circle. Mis 3 Johnson sent in a clean shot to Miss Dcwe who drovo hard to tho net for Miss Rankin to make a splendid savo and clear. A massed attack by tho light blue forwards got tho upper hand of tho defence, and although Miss Currio fought hard to save her chargo. Miss Cummerfield opened tho light blues’ scoring account with a tricky shot. Oroua 1. Taihapo 0.

Dull play followed, neither team showing much combination in tho attacks which woro frequently left to only ono or two players of either side to repel. A reversion to their former combined tactics saw tho light blue forwards sweep on masso into the Taihapo circle, Miss Clapham finding the net. Oroua 2, Taihape 0.

Desultory play in midfield followed, full

timo being called without chango in the score. Messrs Herdman and Hobday woro tho referees.
