SATISFACTORY RANGE

GOOD ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS.

WELLINGTON, Aug. 5. Most successful short-wave Morse radio tests were carried out on Saturday evening by the wireless operator in Ivingsford Smith's aeroplane Southern Cross, which was making a special flight near Sydney for that purpose. The signals were received with very good strength by the Post and Telegraph Department radio officials in Wellington throughout the test, which lasted over half an hour. The distance spanned was about 1250 miles, which is regarded as a satisfactory range for an aeroplane short-wave transmitter. The signals were favoured by good atmospheric conditions. The Southern Cross was also heard by the Wellington officials exchanging messages, on the 600-metre wave-length commonly used by shipping with the Sydney wireless Morse station. The aeroplane operator signalled the Wellington listeners that he would advise them later of further tests. The signals were also clearly picked up in Auckland by an amateur operator there.
