from stable and course

(By “Binocular.”)

All racing animals advance a year in age to-day. Christchurch and Poverty Bay Hunt fixtures next Saturday. The southern meeting will serve as a pipe-opener to National candidates. Hoylake is reported to be striding out freely in his work at Riccarton and the imported grey is expected to do credit to T. Lloyd very soon.

Amorist, who has been purchased by Mr H. Dampier Crossley, lias gone into R. Longloy’s stablo at Riccarton. It is probable that he will bo put over the hurdles.

The Swell was jumped over a couple of hurdles at New Plymouth on Saturday, but his display is stated to liavo been not over impressive. He skipped over the first- fence' and jumped very high at the second. Lady Quex has been causing her trainer anxiety of late, her shoulder showing a tendency to soreness. in her track work at New Plymouth on Saturday she moved nicely over a couple of furlongs and she may have thrown the trouble off.

Hurlv Burly, a rising three -year-old filly by Panmure from Scrimmage, is stated to be a maiden worth keeping in mind. She has not had a raco yet, but she may show up prominently in the new season.

Patrolet made a re-appearance on the track on Saturday, states the New Plymouth News. The Patronus gelding has always shown pleiity of pace on the tracks, but never seemed to do it right on race days. He is also stated to be a proficient jumper. "■The new addition to T. F. Quinlivan’s establishment in Hawkers Bay, Shortlands, can lay claim to have been bred the regal way, comments “The Squire,” as he was got by Acre from Bess Laddo, by Sir Laddo—Cecile, by Gold Reef—Puwerowere, by Nordenfeldt—Pungawerewere.

F. C. Porter, who is still very lame as the result of his fall when riding Count Cavour at Auckland on New Year’s Day, has decided to retire from riding after 25 years of active racing. He now purposes entering the training branch at which he has iiad some experience.

Nincompoop, one of the Winter Cup candidates, is reported to have got through a lot of useful work lately. On occasions he gallops really well, but he is not always in the humour. He however, looks very well at present and might well be numbered as among the possibilities for the big race. The ex-northerner Tuahine, who works in company with Martarma at Riccarton, is stated to have been galloping very attractively in the south and it has been stated that it would not occasion any surprise to see her win a race in the near future.

One of the Awapuni contingent for the Grand National meeting, Frisco Jack, claims two steeplechase engagements at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, he being topweight among the hunters and on the minimum in the Homeby Steeplechase. In company ■with Rangi Sarto, Frisco Jack left for the south this morning to take part at the Hunt fixture on Saturday. The outings will no doubt furnish their connections with a line on their prospects for the more important racing to follow. Local enthusiasts would he pleased to find Frisco Jack again reach the top of his form. Locarno is among the lightweights fancied for.the Winter Cup. This horse won a five furlong event at • the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club meeting, and subsequently annexed a six and a half furlong raco at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club meeting. He is owned by Mr F. Armstrong, who won the Winter Cup with Cherry Blossom in 1916. Carinthia is apparently being put to hurdling, for her name figures among those entered for minor hurdle events at Riccarton this month. Carinthia was rather disappointing at-Wellington and probably this is why she is to be tried at the jumping business.

Erin-go-Bragli ran a good raco over hurdles at the Wellington winter meeting, leading the field till well into the straight in the Talavera Hurdles, and finishing third. He is nominated for minor jumping events at the Grand National meeting, and should improve on his showing at Trcntham. Radiate has been performing well over steeples this season, and ran a good raco at the Wellington winter meeting, when ho finished second to Matu. He was not started again at the meeting, but he lias been nominated for events at the Grand National meeting, and if taken south the son of Polydamon and Bleriot should go well. Loughrea is among those engaged at the forthcoming Grand National meeting. Ho is stated to have been limited with the hounds recently, and has good jumping ability. Loughrea was a good horse on the flat, winning among other races the Wellington and Dunedin Cups, but he lias yet to contest a hurdle event.

W. Rayner will bring Lysander in again any day. states a Wanganui writer. The son of Absurd—Pennon put on a lot of condition during his spell, but lie lias been hacked about the station during the last week or so, and this will have hardened him considerably. All going well, Lysander will probably be forward enough to be given a raco at the Wanganui Spring Meeting.

Alan McDonald is riding unluckily at present. Since the Wanganui meeting in May ho lias had fifteen falls. His luck will turn shortly, aqd possibly he ho will start off the new season by riding some winners at Riccarton. When Royal Lineage won the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton last August lie was ticked off among horses likely to extend his record. Something, however went' wrong with him and he was off tho scene for several months. At the Hawkes’ Bay Winter Meeting in June he managed to get up’ into third place in the Kidnappers’ Handicap (61 furlongs), and as lie figures among the entrants for several events at the C.J.C. meeting that would seem to point to his progressing satisfactorily in his training. In commemoration of his emerging from the season’s activities at tho head of tho jockeys’ championship for tho second sucessive occasion, the Gisborne Racing Club presented T. Green with a gold mounted whip on Saturday.

The well-known Sydney and exNew Zealand trainer, George Price, arrived in Auckland from Sydney on Monday morning on a flying visit to the Dominion. Since settling in Sydney in 1922, G. Price lias trained 120 winners and is the leading trainer for the Sydney metropolitan and provincial area. He will make tho return crossing from Wellington on Friday.
