FIGURES FOR THE MONTH

Judging from the borough permits issued last month, local building is again brisk. A big increase is shown in the value of the permits for July the figures being £36,746 and £21,697 respectively. The value of the permits issued for shops, offices and business premises last month was £20,430, an increase of £12,951 .over the June figures, which were £7,479. The principal item was £13,500 for the erection of a garage, shops and offices on the corner of George and Cuba Streets; £3,873 was also shown ns the estimated cost of tho three shops and offices next to the Bank of New Zealand in Rangitikei Street, while £1957 was the value stated of the permit for the projected new Plunket rooms in King Street. . A small increase is also noticed in the value of the permits for residences. The June figures were £12,310, the estimated cost of 14 houses, while the July permits totalled 15, the cost of the houses being estimated at £13,139. Permits for alterations, additions, and motor-sheds totalled £3177 last month as against £I9OB in June.
