STATEMENT BY MAHONEY. MONEY WON AT FLEMINGTON. SYDNEY, July 17. With regard to the allegations of the Labour member of the Federal House of Representatives, Mr W. . Lambent, that a safo seat for Mr E. G. Theodore had been secured by bribing a sitting member, Mr W. G. Mahoney, to resigu. Mr Mahoney states that he has an affidavit from a South Australian solicitor which supports his (Mr Mahoney’s) claim that he collected a substantial sum when Spearfelt won the Melbourne Cup. Mr Mahoney adds that the money with which lie purchased his hotel was the result of this win, .and that Mr Scullin, leader of the Federal Labour Party, deliberately suppressed the evidence that ho won it at tho Flemingfon racecourse until after tho Royal Commission had closed. Mr Mahoney states that this was done because he always opposed Mr Scullin, and when he (Mr Mahoney) learned that the evidenco was available ho w.as advised by his counsel that it was too late, as the commission had closed. Early in May Mr Lambert, M.H.R. for West Sydney, declared that, when Mr E. G. Theodore, the Labour leader in Queensland, was contemplating entering Federal politics and looking for a safo Labour seat, an offer of £BOOO was made for him (Mr Lambert) to resign his West Sydney constituency. He declined, though tho offer was tempting. Mr Theodore was afterwards provided with tho Dailey seat, Mr W. Mahoney making way for him. Mr Lambert added: “Now I find that tho same crowd that offered mo £BOOO has jockeyed me out of tho West Sydney Labour selection and I am a beaten man.” Mr Theodore described Mr Lambert’s statement as too grotesquo to warrant serious consideration. Next Mr George Gann, former Chief Secretary in the Lang Government in New South Wales, declared that Mr P. Coleman had been approached to resign his Reid seat' for Mr Theodore on the promise of monetary consideration.
