SECONDARY SCHOOLS

HIGH SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. Mr W. R. Birtiie presided ovor tho monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors last evening. There were also present Mrs Aitchison, Messrs W. T. Penny, M. H. Oram. W. F. Durward, T. R. Hoddor, W. L. Fitzherbert and O. Monrad. An apology for absenco was received from Mr J. A. Nash, M.P. The Rector of tho Boys’ High School (Mr J. Murray) reportod a roll number of 333 with an average attendance of 311. Influenza had boon prevalent and had olfectcd the attendance. The principal of tho Girls’ High School (Miss Hodges) reported a roll of 200 with an average attendance of 186. Tho director of tho Technical School (Mr G. G. Hancox) reported that at tho recent electrical wiremen’s examination, five candidates had passed the written test and threo the practical test. SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENTS. Tho question of permission being given for entertainments to be presented in tho schools under tho jurisdiction of tho Palmerston North High Schools Board, and for which the pupils were charged, was discussed and it was decided not to allow after school performances. The discussion arose when the Technical School Director (Mr G. G. Hancox) asked for a ruling on the matter. Mr W. F. Durward stated that ho was wholly opposed to tho practice and that tho principle was wro*ng. No school should bo used for tho pupils to bo exploited, he added. Attention was drawn by members to the possibility of tho entertainments boing educational and it was stated that often part of the proceeds were given towards some school object. Mr Durward. said that ho objected to the practice at any time. Mr Fitzherbert: What difference is thero in the boys paying for an entertainment at tho school or at a theatre. Mr Durward : Tho principle is just the same as selling cigarettes in the school. Mr Penny: What if the entertainment is ono of advantage to tho pupils? Mr Durward : I don’t care if it is. It is wrong so long as the pupils have to pay. Tho board finally decided not to allow after school performances.
