(From Our Own/ Correspondent.) OTAKI, July 16. Old Offenders. —Two men, William Atkinson and Joseph Percy Moreau, with several aliases, wero arrested by Constable Sathcrlcy on Friday night and_ lodged in tho cells. On Saturday Atkinson was charged with being an incorrigible rogue, and Morcan was charged with being a rogue and vagabond. Tho constable stated that tho pair had proved a nuisance by bogging, and when “turned down” used insulting language to women folk. Both wero also over fond of using bad language and drinking methylated spirits. Tho presiding J.P.’s, Messrs O’Rourke and Smith, sentenced Atkinson to six months’ imprisonment and Morcan to three months. Burglary.—This district is getting notorious for burglaries, petty thefts, etc. The latest is that tho Waikanae railway station was broken into on Friday evening and the sum o7’ 50s stolen. The night previous there wero two burglaries in Johnsonvillc, and it therefore appears that the burglars aro working north. Cabbages Stolon. —A local Celestial, who owns a largo vegetable patch, has missed many cabbages and other vegetables lately. The grower has spent sleepless nights and while on watch on one occasion ho saw his vegetables disappearing. “John” did a war-dance, yelled, and then settled down to follow tho thief who by this time had a good start. Recent Burglary.—Some months ago Messrs Allan and Co.’s business premises wore broken into and men’s apparel, etc., stolen. Tho blamo was at first fixed on two local youths, then a visiting motor man, and now it is rumoured the police havo a new clue. Sheep Heads. —It is stated that several sheep heads with cars cut off have been found near the Otaki water works. Evidently not tho work of wild pigs. Guides’ Shield. —A largo wooden shield of -Now Zealand wood, with several smaller wooden shields • let in, has been presented to the Maori Guides for patrol competition. The shield is a fine ono, and the work has been beautifully done by Mr Walter Best, of Otaki. Visitors, —Mr Gordon Maitland, ex-Mayor of Picton, and Mrs Maitland, who havo been on holiday in Otaki for several weeks, will return homo at tho end of the month. Mr and Mrs Patterson, of Hawera', and Mrs Whitcombo (Wanganui) are also on holiday here. Accident. —Mr John Slack received a nasty head injury at a recent football match at Waikanae, and tho advice of a specialist has been sought. “Jack” is very popular with his club mates and an early improvement is hoped for. Physical Instructor.—Mr Frank Roydhouse, who resided in this district when a youth, has been appointed physical instructor to the schools between Tokomaru and Waikanae. The gonial “Frank” looks well, and his presence should be hailed with delight, especially as he makes himself at homo with children.

Old Identity.—Mr Jeff Eagar, 91 years of age, and Otaki’s oldest resident, on Saturday entered tho Homo of Compassion in Wellington. Mr Eagar, although totally blind, enjoys splendid health otherwise.

Improvement Shown. —“Pam” Wilson, tho little girl who was seriously injured by being run over by a motor car, lias returned homo, but will be confined to her bed for several days yet. Basket Ball.—The Convent girls on Friday defeated Manakau, and the latter in turn defeated Otaki. Euchre. —The Fire Brigadesmen challenged a team of bowlers to a game of euchre on Friday. Tho latter won, 27—26. A return game will be played at the weekend.

Hockey Social. —The handsome prizes given for the Hockey Club’s euchre tournament have boon won by Mrs Fairley, Mrs Gasson, Messrs Taliiwi and Beauchamp. Presentation.—Miss Murphy, who has been appointed supervisor to the Levin telephone exchange, was entertained prior to leaving Taihapc and presented with a fine leather suit ease. Tho presentation was made on behalf of the Taihape Golf Club. Racing Dates. —The 23rd and 24th November have bene allotted to Otaki Maori Racing Club as tho dates for its next race meeting. It was hoped to secure dates in December. Football. —On Saturday matches for the Austin banner were played. Levin defeated Foxton, 6 —5, while Manakau and Otaki played a drawn game. Tho Otaki third grade team defeated Hautcro, 13—3, while a team representing the local cricket club defeated E. T. Taylor and Co.’s team, 18 —16. Hui Mai juniors defeated Weraroa B—6. after a fine game. Otaki Hospital.—Members of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union are “up in arms” over the delay in making the Otaki Hospital open for various cases, pointing out that several serious motor accidents have occurred of recent date, yet not one has been taken to tho hospital. Golf.—ln the golf match at Otaki on Saturday, tho local club easily defeated Ranui, 11 —5.
