SAFEGUARDING DUTY.
IMPOSED ON ENAMELLED WARE (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, June 9. The House of Commons yesterday passed a resolution imposing a safeguarding duty of 25 per cent, for five years on enamelled ware. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, President of the Board of Trade, recalled that the original duty had been imposed in 1922 bv Lloyd George’s Government. When it lapsed in 1924, foreign imports had increased, hut not to sue! an extent as to persuade the Safeguarding Committee in 1926 to advise the reiniposition of the duty. A fresh claim before the Identiea Committee had now succeeded, be cause new evidence, including statis tics of the census of producing hat been adduced, showing that six out o eighteen firms in this country hai been compelled to close down.
