MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL.

(Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, May 9. / Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick presided over a meeting of the Manchester Street School committee on Monday night. Mr W. H. McLean, acting-headmaster, reported that the roll number had slightly increased and was now just over 480. The average attendance was 425. During the month tho school had been visited by the medical officer and staff, by Mr E. LI. Lange, agricultural instructor, and _by Miss Jenkins, boarding-out officer. Sickness had caused a little inconvenience to the school staff, Miss Hiers bfeing off duty for three and a-balf days. Tho school savings bank was still going strong and 18s 10(1 had been earned in interest. Seven new individual accounts had been opened. —Tho committee was pleased to learn that tho attendance was on the up grade again. After a discussion on tho question of awarding the dux honour tho committee decided to await tho arrival of tho now headmaster, Mr R. L. Mcllroy, beforo taking any further action in tho matter. The Education Board wrote stating that Mr Mcllroy would assume his duties at tho school on May 21st. It was decided to go into- methods of raising an extra £25 this year above the usual cost to meet expenses in connection with the dental clinic and the decreasing of the capitation grant. The secretary was authorised to forward to the board tho sum of£ll collected for tho purpose of purchasing a gramophone for the school. Thi3 sum will bear the board’s £1 for £1 subsidy. The ground committee was instructed to have the necessary repairs and improvements carried out to the girls’ playing area and also to the boundary fence. Sub-committees were appointed as follow:—Finance, the chairman and Messrs J. Campbell, P. Desmond and T. A. GoldSmith ; grounds, Messrs W. Andrews, E. Hosking and S. McDowalll; visiting, Mesdames Bellman and Fitzpatrick and the chairman.
