RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Racing' at Egniont to-morrow. Lady Passenger may compete in the hurdle events at Wanganui. M. McCarten has been associated with Limerick in 19 of his 24 victories. Nominations for all events at the Otaki meeting on June 2 and 4, close on Friday night at, eight o’clock. McCarten’s five winning mounts on Limerick on the recent visit to Australia were worth £350. 8s 6d to the horseman. The Rawson Stakes gave McCarten a percentage of £25 8s fid, the Chipping Norton Stakes £37 10s, Autumn Stakes £B7 9s, All-Aged Stakes £IOB 15s, and King’s Cup £9O 16s. A half-sister to Lady's Boy by Surveyor from Lady Potou has been sent down from Auckland to Te Awamutu where she has joined up with A. Cook with a view to being prepared for her two-year-old racing. Phaola is reported to bo putting on tiio right condition to lit her for further racing. This mare is quite at home in heavy going and, if she can be got back to her earlier form, should pick up some stake money.

The Lei&hton-Flora McDonald youngster in it. 11. Cowan’s stable at Eliersiie, who was recently added to the list, is again on the tracks doing light tasks. A brother to .Dumblane, the youngster will raco under the cognomen of Symon. During the week, writes “Whalebone,” a rising two-year-old gelding by Peach Brandy from Cool La-ss was dispatched to Hawera from the Auckland Stud Company’s property. The gelding, who is a half-brother to Cool Mint, goes into R. Brough's stable.

Comical went through to Hawera from Poukawa last week and will thus have been on the scene for some few days before figuring under silk to-morrow. Comical claims engagements in both the Egmont and Adamson Steeplechases. Arausio lias been selected as the mate of Shirley-, the daughter of Absurd and Hoy having been definitely retired ‘ from the turf. 'Arausio, through his sire, is a grandson of Sundridge, while Shirley, through Absurd, is a grand-daughter of tile same horse.

Honour, the rising two-year-old son of Limond and Homage, who was purchased last January by Mr G. D. Greenwood for 2500 guineas, and incidentally' established the Dominion record prico for a yearling, is reported to bo doing well on the Riccarton tracks.

Considerable interest will bo centred in the Egniont meeting to-morrow for it marks the entry upon the winter jumping campaign. As many of the candidates will be making their first appearance, form is apt to provo erratic so backers will be found treading warily. Proceedings will be entered upon with tlio Tongahoe Hurdle Handicap in which Ngala is required to givo Euchre, who is next on tiie list, IBlbs. Awapuni furnishes two representatives in Vexatious and Mister Gamp, both of whom are from J. Coyle’s stable, and the pair might welf play a part, although Ngata, Mount Marta and Olympic should be preferable.

Onward won the Farewell Handicap at Opunako with 9.0 on his back, but the class on that occasion was not so good. Keddar, who has 8.11, hits been very disappointing on occasions, while the same might well bo said of Orcadcs. However, the pair, might well run up to track form, although some opposition can be expected from Bisox, who is in well, and possibly Green Acre.

Backers will have little to base their selections in the Hack Steeplechase on and while Banjuko reads well with 11.5, there is little to indicate how the handsonio son of Bisogne is. Awapuni stables furnish two candidates in Royal Heather and Son o’ Mine, the former being from L. Knapp’s stable and the latter from J. Coyle’s. Both have been doing fairlywell- on the tracks, but whether they are ready is problematical. Comical, who claims Great Northern engagements, will have the advantage of starts at Hawera and Wanganui prior to going north, but again there is little disclosed form . The local representative Puwhero is rapidly coining back, but it is doubtful whether he is ready to run out two and a half miles. Brigadier Bill, on the other hand, won well at Manawatu over the smaller fences and he might well put forward a bold bid: Frisco Jack was looking in apple-pie order prior to going through to Fox ton, but how he has progressed in his jumping essays is not known. Bonny Rill might mako a bold bid for the honours, although Brigadier Bill and Frisco Jack might be deemed preferable.

Quite a. fair class of sprinter is engaged in tlie Flying Handicap, Benzora being at the head of the table with 9.3, there being a drop of 12lbs to Silvermine and Flying Juliet. Broad Acre reads nicely with 111) less than Flying Juliet, who incidentally won on the concluding day of the Waikato fixture in heavy going. Of tlie lighter weights Bonogne should hold undoubtablo prospects with 7.3, while Nnstori is a possibility. Broad Aero, Benzora and Bonogne might well be the elect.

That versatile performer Nukumai will make his return to the active ranks at llawera when the Manchinoel gelding will contest the Mcßae Memorial, but, being in receipt of but lib from Yoma, his prospects do not read particularly bright at this stage of the 6eason. The northerner, Town Bank, acts well in heavy going, while his recent form lia.s showta improvement. Manly' should account for Vivo and Orazone should the going bo heavy, while Kilmiss and Dayguard would bo possibilities under the same conditions, while Blimp should not be disgraced. Probably Town Bank, Yoma and Manly will be in strongest demand.

A hack field of fair class promises to be produced in the Tawhiti Hack Handicap, Royal Aero being topweight with 8.0, Mendip being 31bs below. Tlie latter has been steadily on the improve of late and the best has probably not been seen of him yet. ICawhakina is quite at home over the journey, while Barryanda. has all the qualifications even if she does not produce them in her races. Flying Shot, Sovena and Gasnapper are three with distinct prospects and the winner might well bo obscured. Mendip, Barryanda and Royal Acre might contest the position of favourite on the day.

Reports from Wanganui state (hat negotiations for the sale of Elysi.anor were almost completed last week when he developed a leg. Had he been sold, ho was to havo gone into the stable of J. P. Coyle at A wap uni. F. Lind, Wanganui, is to have an addition to his string shortly in Calithe, a four-year-old son of California, out of a Lotho mare. Calitho has so far faced the starter on twenty-seven occasions, but has not done much good, scoring a couple of seconds. 11c will be gelded before he races again.

Roscrea, Limerick’s lmlf-brother, has come to hand very quickly of late, and hud his first sprint lor close on twelve months at Riccarton last weok( say 3 the Press). Every hope is entertained that lie may outgrow his leg disability, and that he will yet be seen to advantage under silk. _ He resembles Limerick in appearance, but in action and other respects he is more like his other half-brother, Ballymena. All racehorses cannot be expected to pay their way, but if a northern scribe is to bo accepted as an authority, Auckland stables contain a large proportion of “duds.” The writer estimates that there are fully ono hundred horses from three to six years old which have never won a race, and, at a conservative estimate of £3OO per annum for each horse, a lot of money is involved.

A couple of promising novices seen in action at the Waikato were Oscar and Becalmed, comments “Early Bird.” The former ran fourth in the Maiden the first day, and then beat all but Miss New Zealand on the concluding day. Becalmed, carrying the same colours as Stormy, was handy in tlie middle of the field, and nt the end was noticed making a dab on the rails, filially finishing fifth. Becalmed is a half sister to Stormy and Breezy, being by Nassau.

Without doing anything special, the Paper Money colt, Monetize, continues to progress along the right lines, and is now moving with plenty of freedom in his track essays, states an Auckland scribe. The youngster is at present being prepared by his owner, Mr A. D. Potter, who intends to nominate him for the Trial Plato at the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. All going well in the interim Monetize will bo given an outing at that fixture.

The election of officers for Levin Racing Club resulted as follows:—President) Mr T. Bevan (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs C. Blenkhorn, W. Higgins, T. liobion, R. A. McDonald, F. F. Newman, and John Ryder; stewards, Messrs W. Bull, R. V. Brown, W. Harman, P. H. Harper, H. McMillan, F. Davies, J. W. Proctor, L. G. McDonald, E. M. Ryder, \Y. Ryder, W. G. Vickers, and M. Winiata. Tidal is a long time coming right, and the patience being taken by N. Cunningham with the French horse should meet with its own reward, writes “Early Bird.” Tidali was produced in the Waikato Maiden, and after getting away slowly ran a good race to finish in the middle of the field. He improved upon this on the concluding day, being sixth in a big field, so that there is every prospect of his making good before long. He may best be suited by a big course.
