BOXING.
Mr Earle R. AVimsett presided oyer a "meeting of the Manawatu Boxing Association last evening when there were also present:—Messrs C. Clem, It* Scott, 11. Mackie, M. O’Brien, H. Essex, B. McGrath, J. Purves, H. Burrell D. G. Armstrong, E. Patterson, G. AVatchorn, A. A. Woods, AV. E. Hudson and J. Evans (lion, secretary ). It was announced that Harry Casey and Nelson McKnight had definitely signed up for a professional bout on June 4, for which date the Opera House had been engaged. The curtainraisers on the night of tho big light should prove of high standard, reported the chairman, for amateur boxers from Auckland, Wellington, AVanganui, Napier and Manawatu had communicated with the association with a view to ’ boxing in the preliminary bouts. Donations of trophies were promised by Messrs B. J. Frecklington, vicepresident of tho Bulls Boxing Association, T. and AA r . Young, Ltd., H. B. Tucker, Ormond Hooper, G. Luoni, and Mrs Swindell. The secretary was instructed to write to each expressing the association’s thanks. Tickets for the ringside seats are to be printed and posted to members of the association. The chairman said that the matter of organising the Manawatu boxing championships to be held in conjunction with the Manawatu A. and P. Association, at the AVinter Show, had been raised. The question was a big one with its good points and its bad. Holding tho championships at show time would certainly mean that there would be many people in town, but'on the other band they might be more interested in tho show exhibits than in the boxing. Members discussed the proposal from all angles and it was pointed out that, as the show would bo held next month, hardly sufficient time was given the boxers in which to prepare for the championships. In addition, the Now Zealand title bouts were not to bo held until considerably later in tho year, and members were of tho opinion that- next month would bo unduly early to pick representatives to carry the Manawatu colours at the national contests, as form might have altered in the interval. It was finally decided that the Boxing Association would co-operate with the Show authorities in conducting an amateur tourney provided that members were admitted to tho boxing hall free of charge.
