GERMANY AND THE LEAGUE
STATEMENT BY STRESEMANN

May 7. lH a speech at the University of Heidelberg, presumably referring to the Rhineland, Dr Stresemann stated that the world would have to realise that the League of Nations .would ho estimated according to its successes in disarmament. The German people had loii" seen the Imperial Government branded with a charge of competition in armaments. They now saw other Powers creating a supremacy in .armaments such as Imperial Germany in her wildest dreams never conceived. It was unprecedented in history that a people with such martial laurels as Germany should renounce warlike retribution, seeking only through peaceful understanding rectification of unhappy errors.
