While in conversation with the householder, accused had made good her escape through a window, climbed over a fence and had run along College Street, being arrested in that thoroughfare.
When asked if she had any question to put, accused replied in the affirmativ. Sho admitted the soft impeachment that she had had a drink, but denied that sho had been “under the Influence,” otherwise how could she have climbed through the window, scaled the fence and run along the street.? The Bench : What did you run away for, then. ? Accused: I heard Sergeant Power s voice. ‘ Tho Bench: Oh, you knew him then. The sergeant mentioned that accused had been before the court in December last. She had been recently in Nelson, but had returned to town last Thursday in company with her little girl and had been drinking since. The Bench asked accused where her husband was, and on being informed enquired whether it was her intention to return to him. Accused: I was going last night. The Bench: 1 will convict and discharge accused conditionally on her being out of town within twenty-four hours. Accused: Can I take my little girl. The Bench : Certainly !
