RACING NEWS.

ANNIVERSARY DAY MEETINGS.

WELLINGTON CUP TO STAR STRANGER.

TWINE’S SURPEISE IN FOXTON CUP. Tlie Anniversary Day meetings at the southern end of the North Island opened on Saturday With racing at Wellington and Foxton under glorious conditions. Honours in the Wellington Cup went’to Star Stranger, who put up .a meritorious performance by carrying the big burden of 9.2 to victory, lhe sprint honours at Trentham were annexed by the southern representative Paperchase, who was one of the little fancied division, the Awapuni candidate, Crown Area, finishing fourth a good performance in view of the fact that it was his first start since the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. At Foxton, Twink brought off a surprise by capturing the principal event frojn Kilmiss, while in the open sprint Vast Acre led Epistle and Beaumont home.

In the far north the Bay of Islands and Waipapakauri Racing Club’s joint two-day meeting was concluded when Rarakau won the principal event.

RACING AT FOXTON. TWINK CAPTURES THE CUP. SPRINT TO VAST ACRE. Brilliant weather greeted the Foxton Racing Club for the opening day of its annual fixtures on Saturday when there was a very (air crowd in attendance. Fields were, in several instances, somewhat restricted and, together with the hard nature of a going, probably accounted for the further defeetions which were forthcoming. Nevertheless, some highly interesting contests were witnessd, the cup event being productive of a surprise when the outsider of the field, Twink, captured the honours from the unlucky Awapuni representative Kilmiss, with Ardtinnaii in third berth. Sprint honours went to Vast Acre, who registered an attractive performance although the Aero mare’s task was made easier by Epistle missing the jump out. Unfortunately for the club, the clash with Wellington —which did not eventuate ion the first day last year—played a large part towards a shrinkage in the totalisator returns, the sum of £12,17 r 9 being handled on Saturday as compared with £14,410 on the opening day last year. At .the concdluskm of the Cup race, the handsome silver cup donated by the Austin Trust Estate was handed to Mr R. W. Bothamley—in the absence of Airs Bothainlcy, the owner of Twink —by Miss Austin. Congratulations were extended the owner, the trainer D. Prosser, of Porirua, and tho jockey, J. S. Potter, on the part they had played towards the success of the Boniform marc, by tho president, Mr W. E. Barber, the speaker mentioning that it was the first cup success of the mentor. KILBURN’S STRONG FINISH. March On, who had been coupled with Birkic, was tho sole defection from the hurdles —the opening event—in which Polyphemus (£342) was preferred to Kilburn (£237) and San Pedro (£161). Birkie acted as pacemaker for a considerably’ portion of the journey from Ratapiko, Kilburn, Polyphemus and San Pedro, the last named being well back. Polyphemus joined Birkie in the van passing the stands and entering the back went away to open a gap from Birkie with another two lengths interval to Ratapiko and Nucleus. At the three furlong post San Pedro and Kilburn both made forward moves, although the favourite was still clear approaching the last fence. Polyphemus, however, struck heavily and San Pedro wrested the lead, only to ho beaten in the run home by Kilburn who came with a strong finishing effort. Nucleus was two lengths back in fourth place with Ratapiko nert, Birkic, who had died away, being well back. FAVOURITE WINS. Blaeberry, Cloyne, Golden Shadow and Warfille were absentees from tho Novice Stakes, leaving the good field of JLS runners to go to tho post. Discourse (£374) was a firm favourite from Shining Star (£201) with the bracketed pair, Fortalice and Land Rent (£181), next in demand. From a good despatch Dreamy and Shining Star jumped to the front to show the way to Discourse and War Wings right to the straight entrance where Shining. Star was finished with, Dreamy drawing out with Discourse in hot pursuit The favourite finished full of runnine- to beat tho leader homo by a length and° a half with a gap of three lengths to Shining Star, who thus added yet another minor placing to his growing record. Service got up in time to take fourth berth from Royal Black, Red Bank, Ironic and Warwings, the ejuintette finishing on close terms, SURPRISE IN CUP. Our Jack, who claimed a later engagement, was an absentee from the Cup race in which the locally trained Henna (£606) was sent out a good favourite, Royal Game (£468) being next in demand with a marked •drop to Gaze (£195). A beautiful dispatch saw Gaze lead Bent, Ardfinnan and Henna into the straight, but approaching the stands Bent ran to tho front from Ardfinnan, Twink, Royal Game and Kilmiss. Entering the back Bent joined Gaze in the van with Ardfinnan and Henna next, although a furlong later Kilmiss commenced to improve her position, and the prdet into the straight was Gaze, Arcjfinnan and Royal Game with Twink coming up fast on the outside. The Boniform mare wrested the advantage from Gaze, Ardfinnan anti Royal Game, who had been lighting out the issue but 50 yards from home Kilmiss lodged a bold challenge and just failed to gather in twink, a neck separating the pair at tho post. Ardfinnan was fourth with Henna, who had come from well back, next. AN AWAPUNI SUCCESS.

Rangitcro gelding home with Sandburr clear of Volplane. VAST ACRE WINS NICELY.

A one dividend field was produced in the Anniversary Handicap—the open sprint event —in which Vast Aero (£512) was in strong demand, Epistle (£365) and Dobbin (£184) being next fancied. Dobbin was actually first out from Vast Acre, Standard and Beaumont, Epistle having been slow to move, but racing on to the course proper Vast Acre assumed tho role of pacemaker from Dobbin and Standard with Beaumont and Epistle at length intervals. Rounding the top the field closed, but Vast Aero was clear of Dobbin when heads were straightened out with Beaumont coming up on tho outside. Tho favourite was never seriously troubled to win by a short length, from Epistle, who came with a late run to beat Beaumont for second place, Dobbin being next to finish with Standard whipperTIIE CONSISTENT HELOTIS. Heliotis (£727) Wjis a hot favourite for the Marotiri Hack Handicap in which Holus Blous and Golden Shadow were absentees, White Ringlet (£475) and Little Queen (£201) ranking next in demand in the betting order. White Ringlet, who had drawn the inside position at the barrier, was first Did, but was quickly joined by Helotis and going along tho back the pair were clear of Little Queen, Bissac and Card Trick. Three furlongs from homo Card Trick deposed Bissac for third berth, only to lose his position, the order into the straight being Helotis, White Ringlet, Bissac, Little Queen, Card Trick, with Whakaaro and Axle well back. In the run to the post tho favourite went away to win nicely by three parts of a length from Bissac, who came strongly from the distance, with White Ringlet third. • Little Queen and Card Trick were the next to finish. WILDERNESS SCORES.

Whenuanui declined his engagement in tho Herrington Handicap and patrons had thus another bare one dividend event to conclude tho day. Beaumont, who was making his second appearance, wound up favourite with £571 invested upon his chances with Bonognc (£456) and Our Jack (£318) next in demand. A ragged dispatch saw Beaumont first out from Our Jack and Wilderness, Othon having been the worst sufferer. Going away from home Wilderness went to the front from Beaumont and Bonogne with March On, Our Jack and Othon at short intervals. Wilderness was still in the van at the straight entrance where Bonogne and Beaumont lodged challenges, but the leader stayed on surprisingly well to win by three parts of a length from Bonogne, who was half a length in front of Beaumont. Then came Our Jack, March On and Othon in that order. Last year Wilderness won both days in hack company and, following the Signor gelding being out for an enforced spell, it was his first outing in public when he made his appearance in the Herrington Handicap. HIMATANGI HACK HANDICAP, of 120 sovs; second horse 20 sovs ana

The defection of White Kinglet from the Himatangi 1 lac:!-. Handicap left nine runners to contest the event in which Vigilance (£283) was preferred to Lin Arlington (£240) with Holus Bolus (£210) next in request. The last named, who had drawn the rails, was slow to begin, Maui being the early leader from Lady Cynthia, the pair leading Vigilance, Borsaline and Lin Arlington along the back. Three furlongs from home Green Acre ran up to Maui with Vigilanve, Lin Arlington and Borsaline in close attendance. Rounding the turn Lin \rlington made a forward move and was alongside Maui as thoy straightened out for homo, Vigilance and G.reen Acre being at their heels. In the run to the post the Awapuni representative drew out to win by a length from Maui and Hino Hohoro, who came through on the rails, in third berth a had in front of Vigilance and Borsaline. DISCOURSE’S DOUBLE SUCCESS. The original field of 10 runners in the Awahou Hack Handicap was reduced to a bare two dividend contest by the defection of Vigilance, Twink, Lin Arlington and Inoe three of the quartette having started earlier. The jump out saw the favourite Kawhakina (£456) slow to move, Lady Faye (£62) being smartest tio begin from Lieutenant Bill (£218) with the more fancied pair, Discourse (£319) and Volplane next. The field raced in that order right to the turn for homo, Lieutenant Bill and Lady Faye being still in the van at the entrance where Kawhakina came up on the outside only to be immediately jojned by Discourse, who was making her second appearance- for the day. The pair drew out anil in a fighting finish the Gasbag filly beat Kawhakina homo by half a length. Lieutenant Bill hanging on long enough to take third mioney. Lady Faye attended the

Time, 1.12 i. RACE FOR THE CUP. Battlement and Overhaul were the course scratchings for ttie Wellington Cup, leaving a field of 14. Right from tho opennig of the machine backers showed a decided preference for the top of the handicap, and tho first tivo numbers were very evenly backed. Laughing Prince eventually found most supporters, and he finished up just under £2OO ahead of Star Stranger, who was much less than £IOO ahead of Piuthair and Mask, with Set Sail at £l5O less. Bennance was the best backed of the lightweights. There was no unusual delay at the start, and the first out wero Laughing Prince, Piuthair, Mask, Set Sail and Joy Bird. Mask led at first, bpt at the mile post Set Sail was in front, closely attended by Joy Bird, and they were followed by Pink Note, Black Mint, Mask, Piuthair and Laughing Prince, Star Stranger being third to last, Novar and Ark Royal bringing up the rear. Down tho back the only material change in the order was Black Mint going up to third place, and Bennancc also moved forward. Running for the turn. Set Sail and Joy Bird wore together, and they led Black Mint, Pink Note, Bennancc, David Garrick, Mask, Piuthair, and Laughing Prince past the half-mile, with Star Stranger beginning to move up from tho rear. Running for the straight Bennanee became moro prominent and Set Sail led into the

straight with Bennance, and they were clear of Joy Bird, Pink Note, Piuthair, Mask, Black" Mint and Star Stranger. Set bail beat off Bannanee and was then tackled by Pink Note. Star Stranger, getting through on the rails, dashed up to them and wont on to win by a length and a-half from Pink Note, who beat Set Sail by a head. Joy Bird was fourth, Piuthair fifth, Countersign sixth, Laughing Prince seventh, Bennance eighth, and David Garrick ninth. Black Mint was the last to pass the pots. Star Stranger won very decisively in the finish. lie lav well. back early, and although Reed tried to improve his position going down the back, ho soon, realised that there was a danger of interference, so he waited for another chance. Ho got a good run home on the rails from the, half-mile, and om c within striking distance of tho leaders he overwhelmed them. Sot Sail made all her own running, and although possibly it caused her to over use herself somewhat, sho really had every chance, and was not good enough. Pink Note ran an excellent race, being well up throughout, and his light weight enabled him to head off Set Sail for second money. Joy Bird ran a good race, but was outclassed by those who finished in front of her. Piuthair was sore, and although she flattered momentarily in the straight, sho failed to muster up her usual vigorous finish. Mask failed, and there did not appear any excuse for him nor for Laughing Prince. Bennance failed to stay, and Black Mint compounded at the end of a mile and a-quarter. Of tho others tho best race came from Countersign. She was right back last half a mile from home, and finished well up. Ark Royal was kicked at the post, and after going about five furlongs was pulled up.—Dominion.

While riding Booster in tho Telegraph Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, Arthur Ernest Didham, of Dunedin, fell from the saddle and sustained injuries to his neck. After being attended to on the course, he was conevyed to the hospital where he was reported last night to be making satisfactory progress. His condition is not regarded as serious.
