NEW PRAYER BOOK
RESERVATION OF ELEMENTS. BISHOP BARNES’S VIEWS. By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.. Received January 20, 1.10 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 20. Continuing bis statement with regard to the prayer book, Bishop Barnes said: _ t „ _ “Speakers in the House of Commons reflected the opinion of a vast number of loyal church men when they objected to tbe change, yet the majority of tho bishops at tho recent conference at Lambeth again refused to exclude continuous reservation. They rejected a motion prohibiting the clergy reserving tno elements in places where worship was customarily held They also rejected a proposal to forbid the clergy indicating by a lamp or otherwise the place where the elements were reserved. As a result tho elements may be reserved m an elaborate canopied aumbry on the chancel wall with flowers, candles and a lamp, also with a notico stating that tho church possesses special sanctity because tho Blessed Sacrament is here reserved. “Furthermore, the bishops empowered tho sanction of devotional services before the sacrament if certain words were used. . , , , “Tho bishops also rejected repeated suggestions as to withholding from lawless clergy payments from ecclesiastical commissioners and Queen Anne’s Bounty House. . “The House of Commons during the historic debate showed religious sincerity and goodwill towards the Church. Wo bishops should respond thereto, but by tho action of our majority wo fail in this duty. _ , “Tho House of Commons almost necessarily must reject tho present pioposals. Tho episcopal majority may then say that if we cannot have continuous reservation, etc., wo must ask for disestablishment. 1 conceive that the reply would be a stern, far-reach-ni''' measure whereby no endowments would bo available for Catholic propaganda within the Church of England. In such a dispute tho Church would bo ruined.” —A. and N.Z. cable.
