CITY OF SYDNEY.

GOVERNMENT BY COMMISSION

SAVING IN TENDERS

Received January 21, 10.40 ,a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 21

According to the schedule prepared by'the Civic Commission, fresh tenders called for the city coal supply show that the aggregate price is approximately £SOOO less than the tenders which were received by the late City Council .and rejected by the commission.—Press Association.

Tho inglorious reign of the Sydney City Council, • under which tho Labour regime of tho last few years had become a by-word with tho citizens, came to an end with the passing of tho old year, writes tho Sydney correspondent of an exchange. It is a case *of “Ring in the now” with a vengeance. The three Commissioners—Mr E. P. Fleming (chairman), Mr John Garlick, and Mr Morton —who are to govern the city until such time as may be decided upon, have been sworn in. Probably they will stay there until a Greater Sydney Bill has been passed by Parliament, and municipal government in Sydney is onco more restored on right lilnes. Certainly the Commissioners will have their hands full for a long time to come in trying to untangle the many knots they will find at tho Town Hall. This is not the first time that the City of Sydney has been under government by Commission. Many years ago—so long that the present generation knows little about it —Town Hall affairs got into such a serious mess that it was found necessary to clear the aldermen out and appoint Commissioners to govern tho city. And they did it well, according to the accounts that have been handed down to us. It may bo that the present three Commissioners will do their job so well that the ratepayers will not bo inclined to part with them. The chairman draws £SOOO and the other two £4500 per annum. These are big salaries, but they are big men, with a big job before them, and may easily prove themselves to be cheap at tho price. Who can say how many thousands they will save the citizens ?
