IN SUDAN COUNTRY
TROUBLE WITH TRIBES. MURDER. OF COMMISSIONER. WITCH DOCTORS STIR UP DISTURBANCES. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) RUGBY, Jan. 20. In the Nuer country, in south Sudan, two patrols of British and Sudanese troops, including a number of aeroplanes, are engaged in an arduous operation. The object of the patrol is to apprehend tribesmen who last month murdered Captain Fergusson, District Commissioner, and who have retreated to islands amid a vast swamp. Efforts are being made to explain to the primitive natives that only the individuals concerned in the murder will be punished and not all the tribe. The other inhabitants in the province where the Nuers dwell have remained loyal. A second patrol is engaged in the area between the Nile and the Sobat River, dealing- with disturbances stirred up by witch doctors, who have conspired to impede road making and other progressive measures. The trouble has been overcome m most areas and the followers of two of the witch doctors, Dwek and Pok, who are still at large, are dwindling.— British official wireless.
