BOXING
; HEENEY-SHARKEY CONTEST.
“Flush Left” writes to the “Standard” : According to a New York cable published in last night’s “Standard,” the referee in the recent HeeneySharkey boxing contest voted for Heeney; one judge called it a draw, while the other judge decided in favour of Sharkey. The final decision, a draw, is difficult to comprehend from a New Zealand point of vieWj as in this country the referee’s award stands when the judges disagree. The rule here governing lack of unanimity between judges says: “If the judges disagree, the referee shall intimate his decision to the announcer.” It is true that the rule quoted lacks definiteness, inasmuch as it leaves the referee the power to differ from nonagreeing judges entirely, and thus makes their position in such a contingency null and void. So that it is safe to say that, had Heeney and Sharkey fought under Dominion conditions, Heeney would have been declared the winner. Apparently the referee in America must go with a judge, and decides in favour of the one whose verdict is nearest his own. Which is at least logical, and that cannot be said for the New Zealand rule as it stands.
