RACING NEWS.

FIXTURES. Jan. 21 Ngaruawahia R.C. Jan. 21 Bay of Islands R.C. Jan. 21,23 Foxton R. C. Jan. 21, 23, 25 Wellington R. C. Jan. 25 Pine Bush Hack R.C. Jan. 28, 30 Takapuna J.C. FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binoocular.”) Second day at Wellington and Foxton on Monday. Acceptances for first day events at the Egmont meeting, to be held on February 2 and 4, close at 8 p.m. on Friday next.

Hawera’s two representatives for the Wellington Cup disappeared prior to the day, Lady Desmond and Bright Glow both experiencing leg trouble which necessitated the engagements being cancelled. The Redfern colt, Island Fastness, is a southerner who can be expected to do a lot better at his next start. At Ashburton Island Fastness was hampered in the early stages, of the Lagmhor Plate, but finished on well.

The two-year-old filly, Rod Jazz, is reported to have shown a raro turn of speed in the same event at Ashburton, but she tired over the last furlong and finished fourth. Although on tho small side, the Solferino filly possesses groat speed. Grand National cut his leg badly on the sido of the truck in which he was being conveyed to the Wairoa mooting and he was returned to Hastings without figuring at the fixture. Tho probability is that he will also be missing from Trentham.

Mr Ilori Tupaea, who formerly raced Crown Coin, has, states a Hawke’s Bay writer, purchased from Sir George Hunter a throe-year-old gelding by Crown Imperial II from a mare by Renown from Rouble. Tho gelding is thus closely related to Crown Coin, who was by Crown Imperial II from Rouble. Nancy Lee has been looked upon as merely a sprinter, but the fact that she has been entered for the Matamata Cup, run over a mile and a quarter, would indicate that her owners intend sending her over a distanco. Tho event in question is set down for February 4. Rarakau was triod over nine furlongs at tho Dargaville meeting and he is stated to have shaped well in finishing second to Alonsoa He is the possessor of a fair turn of speed and should provo worth keeping in mind for later engagements.

Macroom was brought south for tho Manawatu and Marton meetings at the holiday period, but while the chestnut ran fair races sho did not prove to be capable of getting into tho money. Returning north for tho Dargaville meeting, she won the first day and then was boaten a head on the second.

Mated with Nigger Minstrel last season, Civilisation has produced a brown filly upon whom has been bestowed tho name Colourline. This brood mare has produced some good stock to date, her offspring including Civilform, Wilderness, Civility, Siaosi, Berinthia, Calculation and Population in addition to the latest arrival.

The champion colt Royal Feast, who recently dropped dead while exercising on the track in Melbourne, was the outstanding two-year-old of the 1926-7 season,

starting seven times for four wins and three seconds. Victories in the V.R.C. Maribyrong Plate, Sires’ Produce Stakes, Ascot Valo Stakes and tho A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes made his winnings during the season £13,119, a record for an Australian two-year-old.

Huikai astonished the ' track watchers before going to Wairoa by doing the fastest round,, on tho plough that has ever been recorded at Hastings, oven though BobrikofT, Sasanof and Eligible have put up fast times on the same track, states a Hawke’s Bay writer. At tho weights Eden Hall must bo given a splendid show in the Takapuna Cup, in which he is very nicely treated indeed in being awarded only 8.2, comments “Early Bird.” Tho Quin Abbey gelding is in receipt of 121 b from Pegaway, and ho should manage to prove the better at this difference. Eden Hall ran a very good fourth in tho Auckland Cup.

Although the A.R.C. Handicap winner Awarere is among those in the Takapuna Cup, it is unlikely that owner-trainer George Paul will let him contest that race, comments the same writer. He is only a sprinter and a race over seven furlongs has already shown that stamina is not his forte. Properly trained for it Awarere may, however, get a middle distance. At present he rules as one of the favourites for the open 6print at Takapuna.

It will be remembered that Desert Glow, immediately after passing tho post on winning tho To Awamutu Cup several weeks ago, was knocked over by another horse and received injuries sufficient to keep him sore and compel him to forego his Auckland Cup engagement. Reports from Te Awamutu now state that the gelding is all right, and present intentions are for him to take his place in the Takapuna Cup field. Landed at the post as fit and well as lie was before the mishap, he should keep tho opposition busy. High Financo rather surprised by the manner in which sho hung on at tho finish of the open, sprint on the final day of the Auckland meeting, writes “Early Bird,” Money Order being tho only one to catch her. High Financo favours the turning courses so that at Takapuna she will get the conditions to her liking. Sho is liberally treated in the sprint with 51b. above the minimum, and as sho is a brilliant beginner it looks as though she will be prominent in events at Takapuna. There are stated to be somo promising two-year-olds engaged in tho juvenile events at tho Takapuna meeting, among them being Prodice, The Begum, Mauriaena and Mithra. Of these The Begum and Mauriaena are proved fillies, and they will go very fast for five furlongs.

A VETERAN TRAINER. S. WADDELL HALE AND HEARTY. At the end of last week Stewart Waddell, one of tho veterans of the New Zealand turf, celebrated his eightieth birthday, writes “Carbine.” A native of Scotland Waddell came to New Zealand in 1863, and after spending three yqars in a softgoode establishment struck out among tho horses in Otago. Ho won races on Musician, Atlas, Schoolboy, and other horses. He was with Dan O’Brien when the latter had Fish-hook. He made a trip to Australia and brought back Lonehand for Mr Neilson, and at the same time bought for himself Rangatira, with whom he won a number of races on the goldfields of Otago. As the years wont by ho rode with somo suoccss, trained a few

horses on his own account, and about thirty y6ars ago became private trainer to lion. J. D. Ormond. During his association with the Hawke’s Bay sportsman he trained some, good herses, notably Renown, Sir Lancelot, Ideal, Daunt, and Sir ■Tristram. In recent years ho has continued to make his present* felt on the turf, hands being Anoma’ly., Shirley, Ra'zzle among the horses passing through his Dazzlo, . and (one of the bc6t of her time) Gold Light. He will bo at Trentham this week, halo, hearty, and wonderful for his ago ,and there will be no shortage of friends to wish him “many happy returns of the day” 1

FIFTY YEARS AGO. A VETERAN JOCKEY. Followers of the turf over the last 50 years or so will remember tho name of Willie Kraft who won the first race on the Greymouth course half a century ago. Air Kraft now resides at Feilding and is keenly interested in tho preparations for tho Greymouth jubilee celebrations. Fifty years ago, Mr Kraft states, the Greymouth meeting was held on St. Patrick’s Hpy- The veteran jockey also rode tho winner of the- first Taranaki Cup and was a guest at the jubilee celebrations held in Ilawera some time ago.—Feilding correspondent.

WELLINGTON SCRATCHINGS. Eulalie was scratched for tho Telegraph Handicap at 11.5 yesterday. Lady Desmond and Rcrcmoana have been scratched for all engagements at tho Wellington meeting. Lady Desmond, according to O. Cox, will be all right again by the autumn. Reremoana is all right,' though still a bit soro through getting down on his heels when galloping.' His next start will probably be in the Taranaki Stakes.

Bright Glow knocked herself slightly while running in the paddock and she was not brought to Trentham. Sho will bo racing on tho Egmont-Taranaki-Wanganui circuit next month.

DOMINION REPRESENTATIVE FAILS Big money is reported to havo beon lost on tile chestnut gelding Bonhomme, who forms one of the team of the Otaki mentor, D.- Webster, in Australia, when figuring at Hawkosbury last month. Earlier in the afternoon two odds-on favourites had failed and bettors went for a recovery on the chestnut. In ‘describing tho downfall, a writer in the Guardian says:—“Attempting to get square, they bet in hundreds on Bonhomme, a New Zealander, in .the last event, and 6 to 4 was laid on freely. They were on good terms with themselves when the favourite lay becapable of catching up any time jockey hind Joyce Alwyne, tho leader, apparently McCarton wished. But suddenly spurting at the straight entrance Joyce Alwyne caught the others napping, and a lead of three lengths suddenly gained put defeat out of the question. Bonhomme had no chance of overtaking the runaway and finished a moderate second. Followers of R. Battersby’s stable throw in for a good win quietly on Joyce Alwyne. But most punters were on Bonhomme, and this, tho unkindest cut of all, sent many of the bigger bettors home —glum, and losers of hundreds.
