DRAINAGE WORKS.
MAKERUA BOARD MEETING
Mr J. presided over the monthly meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board held yesterday. There were also present: Messrs N. B. Gibbons, A. Seifert, H. Akers, R. L. Tippler, J. H. Liggins and H. J. Hume. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer, Mr W. H. Miles, reported as follows: Since the last meeting the raising of the banks along the Tokomaru River has been completed. The pumping plant in Dalziell’s is now in good working order, and Barber’s floodgate has also been put in good working order. The pipes running through the bank at Whitanui want attending to soon, as the water is running back along the pipe line. lam at present renewing the top of the large culvert on Mr T. Dalziell’s, drain. Two teams are filling in the hole at Kingston Road. The cleaning of the intersecting channel is progressing satisfactorily, there being only about a mile to complete to Akers’ drain.— Adopted. GENERAL. It was decided to give Mr Akers permission to deepen his drain from the intersecting channel to the Manawatu River. The overseer was instructed to prepare estimates for the maintenance of drains for the next meeting, as it was considered that, in view of the dry weather, the time was opportune for work on the drains. The Buckley Drainage Board wrote asking for a reduction in the hiiro' of the dredge should a breakdown cause a serious delay. On the motion of Mr Gibbons it was decided to reduce the charge to £5 per week in such an event. In a letter, the Public "Works Department stated that a bucket on the dredge required replacing and that the cost of same should be met by the board as the rent the department paid covered depreciation. Accounts totalling £324 5s Id were passed for payment.
